Long ago, at the edge of an Arab town ringed with date palms, there lived an old mother with two sons. The elder, Jafar, was the headman of the town; he heard people’s complaints and settled their quarrels. The younger was Bahlul: learned, full of jokes, and very, very wise.

One winter night, knock-knock, someone rapped at the old woman’s door. There stood a merchant covered in dust. “Assalamu alaikum, mother. Night has fallen and I could find nowhere to stay. Could you give me shelter?” The old woman smiled. “Wa alaikum assalam. A guest is a blessing from Allah. Come in, my son.”

The merchant was very hungry. The old woman lit the stove, fried ten eggs, sizzle-sizzle, and served them with hot bread. Sitting at the dastarkhan, the merchant ate happily. “How much do I owe you, mother?” “Eggs and bread together, one and a half dirhams.” “Very well, I’ll pay you in the morning.” But at dawn the old woman had gone to the well to fetch water, and the merchant had to hurry off with his caravan. He told himself, “Insha’Allah, I’ll come back next year and repay her with something extra.”

And he kept his word. A year later he returned and placed ten whole dirhams in her hand. “Mother, I couldn’t find you that morning. Please take ten instead of one and a half.” The old woman was overjoyed and hurried next door to tell her neighbour.

The neighbour listened and wrinkled her nose. “Oh dear, you’ve been cheated! If those ten eggs had hatched, you’d have ten chicks. The chicks would grow into hens, the hens would lay more eggs… think how much you’d have by now! Go and tell Jafar.” The old woman wavered, but in the end she went to her elder son and complained. Jafar grew angry and had the merchant held in the guardroom of the headman’s house.

That same day Bahlul happened to visit his brother’s guardroom on some errand. Seeing the merchant sitting gloomily in a corner, he asked, “Brother, what has happened to you?” As the merchant told his tale, Bahlul realised it was his own mother’s story! He asked just one question: “Were the eggs raw, or cooked?” “Fried, brother! I ate them piping hot.” Bahlul smiled. “Don’t worry. If you’re telling the truth, you’ll be set free.”

Then Bahlul went to his elder brother. “Brother, give me two sacks of wheat. I want to sow a field.” Jafar was pleased and gave them gladly. At home, Bahlul set his mother’s two biggest pots on the fire, filled them with water and poured in all the wheat. Bubble-bubble, the grain began to boil! His mother stared. “What are you doing, my son?” “I’m going to plant boiled wheat, Ammi. The shoots will come up extra green!”

His mother ran in alarm to her elder son. “Your brother has lost his mind!” Jafar came and scolded him. “Whoever heard of boiled wheat sprouting?” Bahlul answered calmly, “Why not, brother? If fried eggs can hatch into chicks, why can’t boiled wheat grow into green shoots?”

The room fell silent. Jafar had nothing to say, and their mother lowered her eyes in shame. Jafar released the merchant at once. Bahlul took the ten dirhams from his mother and gave them back to the merchant. “Forgive us, brother. This is for the trouble you have suffered.” And his mother said too, “My son, I was wrong to cause a guest such hardship.”

The merchant raised his hands and made dua for them all, then set off happily on his way. For a long time afterwards the townspeople talked about it: how wrong it is to let greedy sums make us hurt an honest man, especially one who gave more than he owed!
