Long ago, at the edge of a green forest ringed by hills, the village people decided to build a new mosque. Ustad Hashem was the master of the carpenters. Saying “Bismillah,” he began the work. Some men felled trees, knock-knock! Some trimmed branches, swish-swish! Some carried logs on their shoulders, and the master himself measured each piece and fitted it neatly into place.
The forest was full of monkeys. They sat on the branches and watched everything with round, shining eyes. One little monkey called Chanchal was completely spellbound. “Why, this is easy! Pull and bang, that’s all!” he told his friends, swinging his tail. “Just wait, one day I’ll be the greatest carpenter of all.”
The carpenters had sawn a thick log halfway down its length. Between the two halves they had pushed a wooden wedge, to keep the gap open so the saw would not get stuck. Chanchal saw the wedge too, but he never stopped to wonder why it was there.
One afternoon the sun grew fierce. The carpenters prayed Zuhr and sat down in the shade to eat. Here was the chance! The monkeys tumbled down to the building site. One grabbed a hammer, tap-tap; another tugged at nails; others rolled bits of wood about in a great scramble. And Chanchal leapt up onto the half-sawn log and seized the big saw with both hands.
Krrr-krrr! went the saw. “Look, look, I’m a carpenter!” Chanchal was delighted. But after a few pulls his eyes fell on the wedge. “What is this silly piece of wood doing here? It must be what slows the work down!” So he grabbed the wedge with both hands and gave a mighty tug. Heave-ho!
Pop! Out came the wedge, and snap! the two halves of the log sprang together, catching one of Chanchal’s paws in between. “Eee-eee! Help!” His friends rushed over. Some pulled, some pushed, but none of them knew what to do, and one by one they got scared and hid behind the trees. Poor Chanchal sat very still, his eyes brimming with tears.
A little later the carpenters came back. “Oh, the poor thing!” Ustad Hashem quickly picked up a fresh wedge. Two men held one side of the log, two held the other, and everyone called, “Heave-ho, all together!” As soon as the gap opened a little, the master slipped in the wedge, and out came Chanchal’s paw. Alhamdulillah, it was only a little sore, nothing more.
The master smiled and poured some cool water over the monkey’s paw. “Listen, little friend,” he said. “From far away, every job looks easy. But inside each one there is a great deal to learn. It took me years to understand what this one small wedge is for!”
Chanchal hung his head in shame. After that day he never again snatched up the carpenters’ tools. He sat on a far branch, watched carefully and thought, “First I’ll learn, then I’ll do.” And whenever the village people saw someone meddling in work he knew nothing about, they would laugh and say, “Careful, don’t be a saw-crazy monkey!”
