Long ago, in a green forest, the king of the monkeys was Kardana. He was just and fair, but very, very old. A young monkey in the troop had long dreamed of becoming king. One day he and his friends made a great commotion, pushed Kardana off his throne and chased him out of the forest. Poor Kardana walked slowly away to a quiet wood by the sea.
In that wood stood a huge fig tree heavy with fruit, and beneath it the waves came splish-splash onto the shore. One day, as Kardana sat on a branch eating figs, one slipped from his fingers and fell into the water. Plop! Below, a tortoise was sunning himself. He caught the fig and ate it. “Mmm, how sweet!”
Kardana liked the plop so much that he ate one fig and dropped the next. The tortoise happily ate one after another. At last the tortoise called up, “Oh, unknown friend, thank you so much for your kindness!” Kardana looked down and smiled. “Assalamu alaikum, brother! I’ve been so lonely here. I’m very glad to meet you.”
From that day on the two became great friends. Kardana picked the sweetest figs, and the tortoise told funny stories about the sea. Days and nights slipped by in chatter and laughter, and the tortoise quite forgot to go home!
Meanwhile, on a little island far away, the tortoise’s wife sat waiting. Seeing her so sad, a neighbour tortoise said, “Your husband is busy chatting with a monkey in the wood on the shore!” The wife grew cross. “Is a new friend more important than his own family?” The neighbour winked and gave her a wicked idea. “Pretend to be ill. Leave the rest to me.”
The neighbour hurried to the tortoise. “Your wife is very sick and keeps calling for you!” Frightened, the tortoise said goodbye to his friend. “Forgive me, my friend, I must go at once. Khoda hafez!” At home he found his wife groaning, “Ooh, aah.” The neighbour said, “The hakim says only one medicine will cure her: a monkey’s heart!”
The tortoise felt as if the sky had fallen on his head. He knew only one monkey: his dear friend Kardana! After much worrying, he made the wrong choice. He went back to the shore and said sweetly, “My friend, come and visit my home one day. Climb on my back and I’ll carry you to the island.” Kardana jumped for joy. For the first time in his life, he would cross the sea!
Bobbing over the waves, Kardana sang happily. But seeing his friend so cheerful made the tortoise’s heart heavy, and he fell silent. “What’s wrong, brother? Why so quiet?” At last the tortoise could not hold it in. “My wife is ill… and the medicine she needs is a monkey’s heart.”
Kardana’s heart thumped. There was nothing but water all around! But he kept a cool head. “Oh, you should have told me sooner! When we monkeys go visiting, we leave our hearts hanging on a branch at home. Let’s go back and fetch mine.” The simple tortoise believed him, turned round and swam back to shore.
As soon as they reached land, Kardana sprang to the very top of the fig tree. “Alhamdulillah!” The tortoise called up from below, “Come on, bring the heart!” Kardana answered, “Brother, does anyone hang their heart on a tree? You broke the trust of our friendship. I forgive you, but I will never ride on your back again.” Ashamed, the tortoise went home with his head bowed, only to find his wife perfectly well! That day he learned: never deceive a true friend. And Kardana knew that a calm mind can find a way out of any trouble.
