Long ago, in a kingdom of Persia, there lived a king with several sons. They were all tall, broad and handsome, except the youngest, Prince Nasir. He was short, thin and very ordinary-looking. When he stood beside his brothers at court, people hardly noticed him.

One day, sitting on his throne, the king glanced at Nasir as if to say, “What use will this boy ever be?” Nasir was clever and read his father’s look at once. Bowing politely, he said, “Father, a person’s worth is not measured by the size of his body but by his knowledge and his deeds. Haven’t you heard? Even a lean Arab horse is worth more than a whole herd of fat donkeys!”

The king laughed, and the courtiers nodded. “Marhaba! Well said!” But the older brothers scowled. They did not like hearing their little brother praised one bit.

Some time later a powerful enemy suddenly attacked the kingdom. There was no time to prepare, so the king rode out with whatever soldiers he had. Across the field the enemy army seemed endless: shields and spears glinting, hooves drumming, clip-clop, clip-clop, and dust rising high. Some of the king’s soldiers began to think of turning back in fear.

Just then little Nasir galloped out ahead of everyone. “I will not turn my back and run!” he cried. “Protecting our people is my duty.” With a shout of “Allahu Akbar” he charged forward so boldly that the enemy’s front line of horsemen faltered, and their banner slipped from their hands.

Nasir turned and called to the soldiers, “Brothers, don’t be afraid! Forward, together!” Seeing such courage in their small prince, the soldiers felt their own hearts blaze. They advanced as one, and the enemy, losing heart, wheeled their horses round and fled far away. Alhamdulillah, the kingdom was saved.

Back at court, Nasir bowed before his father’s throne. “Father, I may look small, but on the day of need it is a big heart that counts. In battle it is the lean horse that serves, not the fat ox tied up in the barn.” The king stepped down and hugged his son tightly. From then on he loved Nasir dearly, and he even named him the future king.

Now the older brothers grew even more jealous. One day they secretly put something harmful into Nasir’s food. But their sister, Princess Maryam, had seen everything through a gap in the window. Just as the dish was set before Nasir, she slammed the window shutter with a loud bang!

Nasir jumped. One look at his sister’s face told him everything, and he did not touch a single bite. When the king heard what had happened, he called his sons, scolded them sternly and punished them. Ashamed, the brothers hung their heads and begged forgiveness. Generous Nasir said, “May Allah forgive you; I forgive you too.”

So that there would be no more quarrels, the wise king divided the kingdom and gave each son a province of his own to look after. He said with a smile, “Ten dervishes can sleep peacefully under one blanket, yet a whole country is too small for two greedy kings!” And everyone understood: judge people not by their looks, but by their hearts and their deeds.
