The Sparrow’s Tug-of-War

An elephant keeps shaking the tree where a sparrow is sitting on her eggs, and a crocodile muddies her drinking pool. When both laugh at her, she ties them to opposite ends of a long vine and tells them to pull. Unable to see each other, each thinks he is pulling against the sparrow, until both give up and say sorry.

Deep in an African forest, where the sunlight could hardly reach the ground through the leaves, stood a huge tamarind tree. On one of its branches a little brown sparrow had built a tiny nest. In the nest were four little eggs. All day long the sparrow sat on them lovingly and hummed a happy tune.

One day, suddenly, THUMP! The tree shook and the nest swayed. Looking down, the sparrow saw a huge elephant scratching his back against the trunk. “Hey, Elephant! You’ll break my eggs! If you bump my tree again, I’ll tie you up so tight you won’t be able to move!” The elephant swung his trunk and laughed. “A tiny sparrow will tie me up? All right, let’s see you try!” And off he swayed.

A little later the sparrow felt thirsty. She flew down to her favourite clear pool by the river. There lay an enormous crocodile, basking on his back, and his wallowing had turned the water all muddy. “Crocodile, please move over! How can I drink?” The crocodile yawned. “Does the river belong to you alone?” The sparrow said crossly, “If I see you here again tomorrow, I’ll tie you up so you can’t move either!” The crocodile chuckled and flicked his tail. “Tie me up if you can!”

Next morning the elephant came back and bellowed, “Where are you, little sparrow?” Then he gave the tree a big shove with his trunk. “Just wait, you’ll see!” said the sparrow. From a nearby tree she pulled a long, tough vine and looped one end around the elephant’s neck. “I’m going for a drink. When I give the word, pull, and we’ll see how strong you are!” Laughing, the elephant agreed.

Holding the other end of the vine in her beak, the sparrow flew to the river. The crocodile was lying there as before. She wound the vine tightly around him. “I’ll hold the other end. When I say so, pull!” The crocodile laughed and agreed. Now the elephant was at one end of the vine and the crocodile at the other. With thick bushes in between, neither could see the other!

Fluttering above the middle of the vine, the sparrow shouted, “Pull!” The elephant pulled towards the forest and the crocodile pulled towards the water. Heave-ho! Heave-ho! The vine went tight, but neither of them moved an inch. The elephant’s feet slipped, and the crocodile’s claws sank into the mud. The sparrow laughed. “What’s wrong? Pull harder! Is this all your strength?”

Morning turned to afternoon. Both were puffing and worn out. The elephant thought, “That little sparrow is so strong!” The crocodile thought, “The sparrow must know magic!” In fact, the two of them were about equally strong, so neither could win.

At last the crocodile panted, “Sister Sparrow, I give up! I’ll never muddy the water again. Please untie me.” And the elephant hung his head. “I’m sorry. I’ll never bump your tree again.” The sparrow smiled, forgave them both and undid the vine. The crocodile slid under the water with a plop, and the elephant quietly walked off into the forest.

A few days later, in the nest in the tamarind tree, four eggs hatched into four fluffy chicks: cheep, cheep, cheep! And from that day on, everyone in the forest knew that strength isn’t everything; with a clever head, even a little sparrow can beat the biggest animals.
