Long ago, in the green hills of Tripura, there ruled a King who was as fair as he was strong. When something went wrong, he never punished anyone in anger. First he patiently found out who was really to blame.
In his kingdom lived a woodcutter called Tentia. One morning he set out to cut wood and found that his takkal, his big chopping knife, was completely blunt. A boat was tied up at the river bank, so Tentia sat on its prow, dangled his feet in the water, and began to sharpen his knife, scrape, scrape.
Suddenly, NIP! A prawn under the water gave his toe a mighty pinch. “Yowww!” Tentia jumped up and, in a temper, swung his knife at a nearby thaibai vine. A thaibai fruit dropped off, plop, right onto the head of a snakehead fish. Bonk! Startled, the fish made an enormous leap out of the water and came down again with a huge SPLASH!
A plump wild buffalo was munching taro plants by the river. Frightened by the splash, he ran off blindly and crashed thump into a tree. In that tree was a mother bat’s nest. Down it fell, and the baby bats scattered, squeaking, in every direction. The mother bat flew about in a panic with her eyes shut, until she flew straight into the trunk of the King’s favourite white elephant!
From that day the white elephant wouldn’t eat. He just waved his trunk about and sneezed. The mahouts offered bananas and sugar cane, but he turned them all away. The royal doctor gave him medicine, but nothing worked. At last a wise old man put his ear to the trunk and heard a little squeak-squeak inside! “Your Majesty, there’s a bat in his trunk.”
The King went to the elephant and said gently, “Bat, come out. Nobody will hurt you.” From inside, the bat said, “Which way should I come out?” “Through his mouth,” said the King. “Am I a burp, to come out of his mouth?” said the bat. The courtiers tried not to giggle. Now the King spoke more firmly. “Come out the way you went in. I promise you a fair hearing.”
The bat wriggled out of the trunk, and the elephant gave a huge, happy sneeze and started munching bananas at once! The bat bowed her head. “Your Majesty, I was sleeping with my babies when a buffalo crashed into our tree and knocked down my nest. In my fright I flew with my eyes shut and hid in the trunk, thinking it was safe.” The King saw that the bat was not to blame, and he sent for the buffalo.
The buffalo said, “The fish’s splash frightened me.” The fish said, “A thaibai fruit fell on my head.” The fruit said, “Tentia’s knife knocked me off.” Tentia said, “The prawn pinched my toe.” Last of all came the prawn. “Why did you pinch him?” asked the King. The prawn scratched his head and twitched his whiskers, but he had no answer. He had only pinched for mischief!
The King gave his judgement. “Hurting someone for no reason started all this trouble. Prawn, bow to everyone and say sorry.” The prawn was so ashamed that he bowed and bowed until his back stayed bent, and his face went red with embarrassment. People say that’s why prawns have curved backs and turn red in the cooking pot. And the mother bat? She found her babies hanging safe and sound in a bamboo clump nearby!
The lesson
Hurting someone for no reason can cause a long chain of trouble, and fair judgement means patiently finding the truth.
