এক বনের ধারে ছোট্ট এক কাঠের কুটিরে মিলেমিশে থাকত তিন বন্ধু—এক বিড়াল, এক দোয়েল পাখি আর হলদে ঝুঁটিওয়ালা এক মোরগছানা। বিড়াল আর দোয়েল রোজ বনে যেত শুকনো কাঠ কুড়াতে, আর মোরগছানা থাকত ঘর পাহারায়। যাওয়ার আগে তারা বলে যেত, “শেয়াল এলে দরজা খুলবি না, জানালা দিয়ে উঁকিও দিবি না, বুঝলি?”
At the edge of a forest, in a little wooden hut, three friends lived happily together: a cat, a thrush and a little cockerel with a golden comb. Every day the cat and the thrush went into the forest to gather firewood, while the cockerel stayed home to keep house. Before leaving, they always said, “If the fox comes, don’t open the door, and don’t even peep out of the window, all right?”
একদিন বন্ধুরা চলে যেতেই চুপিচুপি জানালার নিচে এল এক ধূর্ত শেয়াল। মিষ্টি সুরে গান ধরল, “হলদে ঝুঁটি মোরগছানা, চকচকে তোর পালক-ডানা, জানালা খুলে মুখটি বাড়া, দেব তোকে মটরদানা!” মটরদানার কথা শুনে মোরগছানার জিভে জল এল। বন্ধুদের কথা ভুলে সে যেই জানালা দিয়ে মুখ বাড়াল, অমনি খপ! শেয়াল তাকে ধরে দৌড় দিল নিজের গর্তের দিকে।
One day, as soon as his friends had gone, a sly fox crept up under the window and sang sweetly: “Little cockerel, golden comb, shiny feathers, here at home, open the window, poke out your head, I’ve brought you peas, so come and be fed!” At the mention of peas, the cockerel’s mouth watered. Forgetting his friends’ warning, he poked his head out of the window, and SNAP! The fox grabbed him and ran off towards his den.
মোরগছানা প্রাণপণে চেঁচাল, “বাঁচাও! শেয়াল আমায় নিয়ে যায়, ঘন বনের ওই পারে, খরস্রোতা নদীর ধারে, উঁচু পাহাড়ের আড়ে!” ডাক শুনে বিড়াল আর দোয়েল ছুটে এল। বিড়াল খামচি উঁচিয়ে ফোঁস করল, দোয়েল ঠোকর দিতে উড়ে এল, আর শেয়াল ভয়ে মোরগছানাকে ফেলে পালাল। এবারের মতো রক্ষা!
The cockerel squawked with all his might: “Help! The fox is taking me away, beyond the deep woods, past the rushing river, behind the tall hills!” Hearing him, the cat and the thrush came running. The cat hissed with claws out, the thrush swooped in to peck, and the frightened fox dropped the cockerel and fled. Saved, this time!
ক’দিন পর বন্ধুরা আবার বনে যাবে। “এবার আমরা অনেক দূরে যাব,” তারা বলল। “ডাকলেও শুনতে পাব না। জানালা কিছুতেই খুলবি না।” তারা যেতেই শেয়াল এসে আবার গাইল মটরদানার গান। কিন্তু মোরগছানা এবার চুপটি করে বসে রইল। শেয়াল তখন ফন্দি বদলে গাইল, “মাঠে ছড়ানো গমের দানা, মুরগিরা সব খাচ্ছে খানা, মোরগছানা পায় না কিছু, কেউ দেয় না একটি দানা!”
A few days later the friends were going to the forest again. “This time we’re going far away,” they said. “Even if you call, we won’t hear you. Don’t open the window, whatever happens.” As soon as they left, the fox came and sang the pea song again. But this time the cockerel sat quietly. So the fox changed his trick and sang: “Grains of wheat in the field are spread, the hens are pecking, all well fed, but the little cockerel gets none at all, not one grain, not even small!”
শুনেই মোরগছানার রাগ হলো। “কী! আমাকে দেবে না মানে?” বলে সে জানালা খুলে মুখ বাড়াল—আর অমনি খপ! আবার শেয়াল তাকে নিয়ে ছুট। মোরগছানা গলা ফাটিয়ে ডাকল, আর ভাগ্য ভালো, দূর থেকেও বন্ধুরা শুনতে পেল। দৌড়ে এসে আবার তাকে ছাড়িয়ে আনল। বিড়াল বলল, “দেখলি তো, লোভ আর রাগ কেমন বিপদে ফেলে?” মোরগছানা মাথা নিচু করল।
That made the cockerel cross. “What! Nobody will give me any?” He flung open the window and poked his head out, and SNAP! Off ran the fox with him again. The cockerel shouted as loud as he could and, luckily, his friends heard him even from far away. They raced back and rescued him once more. “You see,” said the cat, “how greed and temper get you into trouble?” The cockerel hung his head.
কিন্তু শিক্ষা পুরো হলো না। তৃতীয়বার বন্ধুরা আরও দূরে গেল। শেয়াল এসে আবার গাইল গমের দানার গান। মোরগছানা অভিমানে আবার জানালা খুলল, আর শেয়াল তাকে নিয়ে চলে গেল একেবারে নিজের গর্তে। এবার তার ডাক বন্ধুদের কানেই পৌঁছাল না।
But he still hadn’t fully learned his lesson. The third time, his friends went even further away. The fox came and sang the wheat song again. In a huff, the cockerel opened the window once more, and the fox carried him all the way to his den. This time his cries did not reach his friends at all.
সন্ধ্যায় ফিরে বিড়াল আর দোয়েল দেখে, ঘর ফাঁকা! তারা বুঝে গেল কী হয়েছে। “বন্ধুকে বিপদে ফেলে রাখা যায় না!” বিড়াল কাঁধে নিল তার দোতারা, দোয়েল সঙ্গে নিল একটা ছোট্ট লাঠি। শেয়ালের গর্তের সামনে গিয়ে বিড়াল দোতারায় সুর তুলল, টুংটাং টুংটাং: “সোনার তারে বাজে সুর, শেয়ালভায়া আছ কি ঘরে? গর্তে বসে কী করো, একটু বাইরে এসো না রে!”
When the cat and the thrush came home that evening, the hut was empty! They knew at once what had happened. “We can’t leave our friend in trouble!” The cat slung his little stringed instrument over his shoulder, and the thrush took along a small stick. In front of the fox’s den, the cat began to play, plink-plonk, plink-plonk: “Golden strings, a merry tune, Brother Fox, are you at home? Why sit in your hole all day? Come on out and hear me play!”
সুর শুনে শেয়াল কৌতূহলে নাক বের করল। অমনি বিড়াল আর দোয়েল লাঠি দিয়ে ঠকাস ঠকাস দুই ঘা বসিয়ে দিল তার পিঠে, আর দোয়েল ঠুকরে দিল নাকের ডগায়। “উ-হু-হু!” বলে শেয়াল লেজ গুটিয়ে এমন ছুট দিল যে আর কোনোদিন সেই বনের ধারে ফেরেনি। বন্ধুরা গর্তে ঢুকে মোরগছানাকে বের করে আনল—ভয়ে কাঁপছে, কিন্তু একদম অক্ষত।
Curious, the fox poked his nose out. At once the cat and the thrush gave him two good whacks on the back with the stick, and the thrush pecked the tip of his nose. “Ow-ow-ow!” The fox tucked his tail between his legs and ran so fast that he never came back to that edge of the forest again. The friends went into the den and brought out the cockerel, trembling with fright but completely unhurt.
সেদিন রাতে তিন বন্ধু একসঙ্গে বসে মটরদানা খেল। মোরগছানা লজ্জা পেয়ে বলল, “তোমরা না থাকলে আমি বাঁচতাম না। আর কখনো মিষ্টি কথায় ভুলে বড়দের কথা অমান্য করব না।” তারপর থেকে সে আর কখনো সেই ভুল করেনি।
That night the three friends sat together and shared a bowl of peas. The cockerel said shyly, “Without you, I would never have been saved. I will never again be fooled by sweet words and disobey my elders.” And from then on, he never made that mistake again.
