Long, long ago, in a hilly village in Japan, there lived an old woodcutter and his wife. They had no children, and that made them a little sad. One day the old woman went to the river to wash clothes and saw an enormous pink peach bobbing along on the current! “Lovely, we can share it tonight,” she thought, and she carried it home.

That night, just as she was about to cut it, the peach split in two all by itself, and out came a beautiful little baby boy! He kicked his legs and giggled. The old couple’s eyes filled with happy tears. The old man said, “He came from a peach, so let’s call him Momotaro, the Peach Boy.”

With love and care, Momotaro grew up as strong as he was kind. One day news reached the village that the ogres from Oni Island across the sea had come again and carried off people’s sacks of rice, their pots and pans and their lanterns. Momotaro said, “Father, Mother, I will go and bring everything back.” Wiping her eyes, his mother made him some sweet millet dumplings called kibi dango. His father said, “Be kind to everyone you meet on the way, never hurt anyone, and never tell a lie.”

On the road he first met a dog. Woof, woof! “Brother Momotaro, where are you going? What’s in your bundle?” “I’m going to Oni Island. Here, have a dumpling.” The dog ate it and said, “I’ll come with you!” A little later came a monkey, chatter-chatter! He got a dumpling too and joined them. Then down from the sky flew a bright pheasant, kyen, kyen! She ate a dumpling and said, “I’ll show you the way from above!”

The four of them rowed across to Oni Island. Inside the fort sat a band of ogres, red, blue and green, with little horns on their heads in stripy tunics. They were munching stolen rice cakes, banging drums and singing terribly out of tune: boom-boom-clatter, howl-yowl!

The pheasant flew over and pecked at their horns, tap-tap. The monkey leapt in and tickled them under their arms. The dog chased them, barking, until they slipped on their own scattered rice cakes, whoops, thump! Laughing and tripping, the ogres tumbled over each other and ended up in a big tangled heap. Momotaro stood at the gate so nobody could slip away.

At last the biggest ogre, the chief, raised his hands and puffed, “Stop, stop, we give up! Ha-ha, hee-hee… no more tickling! We promise never to take anyone’s things again.” He gave back all the village’s rice, pots, pans and lanterns, and a chest of gold and silver as well. Then he said, “You are so brave and so kind! Stay here and we’ll make you king of our island.”

Momotaro smiled. “No, brother. My old parents are waiting for me. My mother’s arms mean more to me than any throne.” The ogres scratched their heads, a little ashamed, and then loaded everything onto the boat themselves.

When he got home, the whole village cheered. Momotaro returned everyone’s belongings and used the gold and silver to mend the homes of poor families. The old couple hugged their son tight. The dog, the monkey and the pheasant stayed on with them. And now and then, songs drift across the sea from Oni Island, and these days they are a little more in tune!
