Long ago, a man had three sons, Ahmad, Mahmud and little Hamid, and one very naughty goat. One day the father said, “Hamid, take the goat out to graze. Make sure she eats her fill.” Hamid grazed her all day in a green meadow. The father asked, “Well, goat, are you full?” The goat curled her lip. “Maa-aa! What grass? He tied me up in a dry, sandy field and played all day!”
The father was angry and scolded Hamid harshly, without listening to a word. Hamid’s heart was badly hurt. Next morning he said goodbye to his father. “I’m going far away to learn a trade.” Then Mahmud took the goat out, and after him Ahmad. Each time the goat told the same lie, and after a scolding, the two brothers also left home to look for work.
At last the father took the goat out himself. After a whole day in the greenest meadow, he asked, “Surely you are full today?” The goat said, “Maa-aa! I didn’t get a thing to eat!” The father froze. “Oh Allah! She’s a liar! I hurt my sons without knowing the truth.” He tied the goat beside the bad-tempered donkey, who scolded her all day long: “Quiet! Not one more lie!” And from then on, the father sat on his prayer mat every day and prayed for his sons.
Meanwhile the three brothers were learning trades in three different places. Ahmad was learning to carve stone, Mahmud was with a coppersmith, and Hamid was with an old shepherd. After three years, Ahmad’s master gave him a small hand-mill as a parting gift. “Think of any food you want and turn this mill, and the food will come out.”
On the way home night fell, and Ahmad stayed at a miller’s house. When he was hungry, he turned the mill and made a wish, whirr, whirr, and out came steaming chicken pilau and juicy fruit! The greedy miller watched in secret, and that night he swapped the magic mill for an ordinary one that looked exactly the same.
When Ahmad got home, he hugged his father. Wiping his tears, his father said, “My son, forgive me.” Ahmad said happily, “I’ll feed all the guests at my wedding with this mill!” But on the day of the wedding feast, no matter how hard he turned it, nothing came out. Some time later Mahmud came home too, with a magic copper pot from his master: stir it with a spoon and you get whatever you wish! But he, too, spent a night at the miller’s house on the way, and his pot was swapped in just the same way.
Last of all it was Hamid’s turn. The old shepherd gave him a hammer. “If you are ever in trouble, say ‘Come out!’ and a hundred strong men will appear. Say ‘Go in!’ and they will all go back into the hammer. But never use it to hurt anyone.” Hamid, too, stopped for the night at the miller’s house. There he saw the miller selling pilau to people from a hand-mill and a copper pot!
Hamid asked, “Where did you get those?” The miller snapped, “That’s none of your business!” Hamid raised the hammer. “Come out!” Thud, thud, out came a hundred strong men, who stood all around the miller. Knees knocking, the miller told the whole truth and begged forgiveness. Hamid realised these were his brothers’ gifts! “Go in,” he said, and the men went back into the hammer. Hamid told the miller, “Never take anyone’s things again.” The miller repented and gave his promise.
When Hamid came home with the mill and the pot, there was great rejoicing. The father hugged all three sons. “Alhamdulillah! I have learned never to blame anyone without knowing the truth.” At the three brothers’ weddings, the magic mill and pot fed the village’s poor families too. And that lying goat? She is still sitting beside the donkey, practising not telling lies!
