Long ago, in a village, there lived a moneylender called Kalu Mahajan. He had vast fields, barns full of rice and chests full of money, but his heart was very small. He never gave anything to anyone, he underpaid the farmhands who worked his land, and he didn’t mind telling lies to save a penny.

One day Kalu Mahajan’s face went pale. His little velvet bag was missing! Inside it were fifty gold coins. He had his servants search every corner of the house and sent men to the market and the river landing. He told all his neighbours, “If anyone finds my bag of gold coins, bring it to me.” Day and night he moaned about his loss.

Two days later Maryam, the ten-year-old daughter of Hashem Miah, who worked in Kalu Mahajan’s fields, came running to her father. “Abbu, look! I found this bag in the grass beside the pond steps. It’s full of shiny gold coins!” They counted them. There were exactly fifty.

Hashem Miah’s family was always short of money. Their tin roof leaked, and it had been a long time since Maryam had a new dress. He could easily have kept the bag quietly, and nobody would ever have known. But he put his hand on his daughter’s head and said, “My dear, this is the moneylender’s lost bag. Taking what belongs to someone else displeases Allah. Come, let’s return it.” Maryam nodded. “Yes, Abbu, let’s go.”

When Kalu Mahajan saw the bag, his eyes sparkled. But the next moment a wicked idea popped into his head. “Why give this labourer a reward? I could squeeze even more out of him!” He glared and shouted, “Hashem! There were seventy-five coins in my bag! Where have you hidden the other twenty-five? Thief!”

Hashem Miah was stunned. “Mahajan Sahib, I swear by Allah, we gave you everything my daughter found.” Tears welled up in Maryam’s eyes. But Kalu Mahajan wouldn’t listen. He went straight to the village Kazi to complain.

The Kazi was a wise and fair man. He listened carefully to both sides. Maryam and Hashem Miah said the same thing again and again: “There were only fifty coins in the bag.” Then the Kazi turned to the moneylender. “Are you certain your bag held seventy-five coins?” Kalu Mahajan puffed out his chest. “A hundred times certain, Your Honour!”

The Kazi smiled gently and gave his judgment. “Then the matter is clear. Mahajan Sahib lost a bag of seventy-five coins. This girl found a bag of fifty coins. So this cannot be Mahajan Sahib’s bag. If anyone finds a bag of seventy-five coins, it will be given to him. And since no one has claimed a bag of fifty coins, it goes to Maryam and her father as a reward for their honesty.”

Kalu Mahajan turned white. He had fallen into the trap of his own greed, and now he couldn’t even tell the truth! Hashem Miah hugged his daughter and said, “Alhamdulillah!” With the coins they mended their roof, bought books and notebooks for Maryam, and shared some with the poor of the village. Everyone understood that honesty is rewarded sooner or later, and greed ends up cheating the greedy.
