In a little village by a river, Sakib lived with his Abbu and Ammu. He was their only son, good at his studies and quick at games. But he had one big fault. His temper flared up at the smallest thing, and whenever he was angry, harsh words came tumbling out of his mouth.
If he lost a game, he told his friends, “You’re all donkeys!” If the auntie next door asked him something, he snapped at her. If his little sister touched his coloured pencils, he shouted the house down. Once his anger passed, Sakib forgot all about it, but the others didn’t. Slowly his friends began to avoid him. His parents talked to him again and again, but nothing worked.
One evening Abbu handed Sakib a cloth bag and a small hammer. The bag was full of nails. “Every time you get angry,” said Abbu, “hammer one nail into the wooden fence behind the courtyard. And when anger comes, first say A’udhu billah and drink a little water.” Sakib thought it sounded like fun. “All right, Abbu!”
On the very first day, tap-tap-tap, Sakib hammered thirty nails into the fence! In the evening he looked at it and was amazed himself. “Wow, I got angry that many times in one day?” Every time his temper rose he had to run for the hammer, and his arm ached from all the hammering. So Sakib decided to try holding his anger back a little.
Over the next days, the number of nails went down: from thirty to fifteen, from fifteen to eight, then three. Sakib noticed that controlling his temper was much easier than hammering nails! Then came a day when he didn’t hammer a single one. He ran to his father, bouncing with joy. “Abbu! I didn’t get angry even once today! Alhamdulillah!”
Abbu hugged him. “Well done! Now here’s a new task. On every day that you don’t get angry at all, pull one nail out of the fence.” Days passed, then weeks. One by one, Sakib pulled out almost all the nails. Only a few were stuck in so tightly that they wouldn’t budge.
Sakib took his father to the fence. Abbu pointed to a small hole and asked, “What do you see here?” Sakib said, “A hole, Abbu. The whole fence is full of holes.”
Abbu said softly, “My son, every harsh word you said in anger was a nail. You can pull the nails out, you can say sorry, but the holes stay. And some nails never come out at all. Hurtful words leave marks on people’s hearts that don’t easily go away. So never use your words to hurt anyone. Use them to spread love and to mend friendships.”
Sakib stared at the holes in silence for a long time. Then he ran to his little sister, to the auntie next door and to his friends on the playing field, and said to each of them, “Please forgive me.” From that day on, Sakib thought before he spoke. And his friends? They began calling him to play again, with big smiles.
