In a corner of Ayesha’s Nanu’s courtyard there was a small garden. It had a bushy guava tree, a yellow sunflower, flowers of many colours and, in a clay pot, a prickly cactus. One spring morning a bright red rose bloomed there. Nanu saw it and said, “Masha’Allah! How lovely!”
The guava tree gazed at it. “Oh, how beautiful! I wish I were that lovely!” The rose lifted its head. “It looks as if I am the most beautiful plant in this garden.” The sunflower raised its yellow face. “Why do you say that? Lots of us here are beautiful. You are just one of us.”
Then the rose looked at the cactus and wrinkled its nose. “Ugh! Look at that ugly thing covered in thorns!” The guava tree said, “What kind of talk is that, Rose? Who can measure beauty? You have thorns too.” The rose replied angrily, “My thorns are nothing like his! You have no taste at all!”
Day after day the rose said spiteful things to the cactus. “You are good for nothing. I’m ashamed to live next to you!” The cactus never got angry. He would answer calmly, “Allah made nothing without a reason, sister. Each of us has some work to do.” The rose would just turn away.
Then came the hottest month of the year. There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky, and the sun blazed down like fire. Nanu had gone to Dhaka to stay with Ayesha’s uncle, and there was no one to water the garden. The soil cracked into pieces. The rose’s petals drooped and its leaves dried up and curled.
One day the rose saw some sparrows poke their beaks into the thick pads of the cactus, sip something, and then fly off, fresh and lively. Puzzled, the rose asked the guava tree, “What are they doing?” The guava tree said, “The cactus stores water inside himself. The birds drink from it.”
“Doesn’t it hurt when they make holes?” “Yes, it does. But he can’t bear to see thirsty birds suffer.” The rose’s eyes grew wide. The guava tree went on, “If you like, the sparrows could bring water from the cactus to your roots too. You only have to ask him.”
The rose turned even redder with shame. How could it ask for help from someone it had insulted so often? But at last it bowed its head. “Brother Cactus, please forgive me. I’m terribly thirsty. Will you help me?” The cactus smiled. “Of course! Come, sparrows!” The sparrows carried water in their beaks, drip-drop, and poured it at the rose’s roots.
Little by little the rose grew fresh again. A few days later, when Ayesha came back with Nanu, she found the rose and the cactus standing side by side like two friends. From that day on the rose never judged anyone by their looks again. It had learned that true beauty lives in the heart, and that everyone has gifts of their own.
