In a village of green paddy fields beside a little river lived Karim Miah and his wife Amina. Their only son, Saad, was five years old. They had a mud courtyard, a row of banana trees, the sound of the adhan from the mosque at dawn, and crickets that sang every evening. Life was calm and happy.
One day something rustled in the bushes by the house. Saad peeped in and saw a tiny mongoose staring back with shiny eyes. “Ammu, look, look! Isn’t he lovely?” Amina smiled. “He is one of Allah’s creatures. We must look after him kindly.” From that day the mongoose stayed with them. Saad loved the mongoose, and the mongoose loved Saad right back. They raced around the courtyard and napped side by side in the afternoons.
A month went by. One day the neighbours invited them to an aqiqah celebration. Before leaving, Amina said to her husband, “Saad is asleep inside. Please keep an eye on him.” The mongoose was curled up beside Saad’s bed.
A little later Karim Miah suddenly remembered some urgent work at the market. “I’ll be back in no time,” he thought, and out he went too. Now only sleeping Saad and his little guard were left at home.
Everything was still. Then, with a soft hiss, a black snake slid in through a gap in the door and crept towards Saad’s bed. The mongoose’s fur stood on end. In one leap he planted himself in front of the snake. Hiss! Pounce! The fight went on for a while, until at last the brave mongoose won and the snake lay still. Saad never stirred; he was fast asleep.
With red marks from the fight still on his mouth, the mongoose ran happily to the door, as if to say, “Look, I saved Saad!” At that very moment Amina came home carrying a pot of water. When she saw the red on his mouth, her heart jumped. “Oh Allah! He must have hurt my boy!” Without stopping to think, she threw her water pot at the mongoose. It hit him, and he tumbled over.
She rushed inside. There was Saad, sleeping peacefully, and beside the bed lay the black snake. In a flash she understood everything, and her eyes filled with tears. “Astaghfirullah! Oh, my dear mongoose, you saved my child! And I…”
She ran back and gathered the mongoose into her arms. Alhamdulillah, he was alive; only his leg was hurt. Saying “Bismillah”, she bandaged it gently and gave him a bowl of milk. When Karim Miah came home and heard the story, he felt ashamed too, for he had left the boy alone. Saad woke up and hugged his friend tight.
After a few days of loving care, the mongoose was scampering around the courtyard again. And from that day on, Amina remembered: when you feel angry, stop and be patient. Never act before you know what really happened. Find out the truth first.
