In a thick green forest lived a lion, the king of the forest. When he roared—ROAR!—birds flapped away and deer hid behind the bushes. Every animal in the forest was afraid of him.
But the days and years rolled by, and the lion grew old. His legs were no longer fast, and his paws were no longer strong. When he chased a rabbit, the rabbit simply hopped away. Finding food became harder every day.
Lying in his cave, the lion thought, “This won’t do. I need a plan.” After much thinking, he decided to pretend to be sick. “When the animals hear I’m ill, they’ll come to visit. Whoever comes close, I’ll catch!” Pleased with himself, he lay there groaning loudly.
Soon the news spread through the forest: “The king is very ill!” The kind animals went to visit him one by one. Some brought fruit, some brought good wishes. But whoever stepped inside the cave was grabbed by the lion’s paw. That was how he filled his hungry belly.
In the same forest lived a clever fox. He too heard about the king’s illness. “I really should visit the king,” he thought, and off he went towards the cave. As he came near, the lion spotted him. Seeing such a plump, healthy fox, the lion was secretly delighted.
“Come in, come in, brother fox!” the lion called in a weak voice. “I am so very ill. Come and sit beside me.” The fox reached the mouth of the cave and stopped. He had noticed something on the ground. There in the dust were lots of footprints—a deer’s, a rabbit’s, a goat’s. Every single one pointed into the cave. Not one pointed out!
The fox understood at once. He smiled sweetly and said, “Your Majesty, I hope you get well very soon. But I can’t come in. I see plenty of footprints going in, and not a single one coming back out!”
With a swish of his tail, the fox trotted back down the forest path. The lion was left sitting in his cave with an empty stomach, growling with frustration. The fox was safe, simply because he kept his eyes open and looked carefully.
