In a village lived a kind man. Next to his house was a little farm where he kept some chickens. Every morning they pecked at grain in the yard, cluck-cluck, and every evening they went into their wooden henhouse. The kind man looked after them lovingly.

One day the chickens became droopy. They wouldn’t eat or cluck; they just sat quietly. The man was very worried. A friend told him, “There’s a doctor who lives in the next village. Call him. He will treat your chickens well.” So the kind man decided to fetch the doctor the very next day.

Meanwhile, a wicked cat was hiding in the bushes nearby. For months he had been eyeing the chickens greedily, but the henhouse door was too strong. Today he overheard the two friends talking, and his whiskers twitched. “Meow! What a chance!”

The next morning the kind man set off for the next village. As soon as he was out of sight, the wicked cat got dressed up. He put on a white coat, perched round glasses on his nose and picked up a black bag. Looking in the mirror, he grinned. “Perfect—a real doctor!” Then off he went to the farm.

At the henhouse door, the cat knocked—knock, knock. In a deep voice he said, “Open up, chickens! I’m the doctor. I’ve come to treat you.”

The chickens peeped through a crack in the window. A white coat, glasses—he certainly looked like a doctor! But that voice? The chickens were very clever. They whispered, “Did you hear that? That’s not a doctor’s voice! That’s a cat’s voice! There’s a little meow hiding in every word!”

So all the chickens answered together, sweetly, “Thank you so much for coming, Doctor! But we are perfectly healthy now, so we don’t need you any more. It would be best if you left!” The cat’s face fell. Knowing he’d been found out, he threw off his coat and glasses and ran away as fast as he could.

At midday the kind man came back with the real doctor. The doctor gave the chickens medicine, and in a few days they were clucking happily around the yard again. When he heard what had happened, the man laughed. “Well done! You really are clever!” The chickens had shown that we must not be fooled by a costume; danger can hide behind sweet words.
