Once there was a king who lived in a grand palace with marble floors, tall pillars and a garden full of colourful roses. In the palace lived the king’s pet monkey. The king loved him dearly and fed him bananas with his own hands.
The monkey lived in the king’s room, and whenever the king slept, the monkey stood guard. That was the rule. The monkey was loyal, but he was not very clever at all. Sometimes the minister would say, “Your Majesty, a foolish guard can bring trouble.” The king would only laugh.
One afternoon the king came back very tired. The moment he lay down on his soft bed, he fell fast asleep. As usual, the monkey sat beside him on guard. A cool breeze drifted in through the window, and all was quiet.
After a while, a fly came buzzing in. It circled round and round and landed on the sleeping king’s chest. Annoyed, the monkey waved it away—shoo! The fly flew off, but soon it came back and landed on the king’s chest again.
The monkey chased it away. The fly came back. Away again—back again! Buzz-buzz-buzz! Over and over. The monkey grew red with rage. “Just you wait, you wicked fly! I’ll finish you off today!”
In his anger, the monkey pulled the king’s shining sword down from the wall and chased the fly with it. Once more the fly landed on the king’s chest. Without a moment’s thought, the monkey raised the sword and brought it down hard—swish!
The fly zipped away. But the sword struck the king! The king woke with a cry of pain. The guards rushed in and the royal doctor was called. The doctor carefully bandaged the wound. Only after many days of rest did the king get well.
Lying in bed, the king thought, “The monkey meant well. But through his foolishness, he did me the greatest harm.” From that day on, the monkey played in the garden, and clever guards took over the watch. Even a loving helper can cause great trouble if he does not think.
