In a forest lived a wolf. He was very greedy. Whenever he found food, he gulped it down without even stopping to chew. The small animals of the forest kept away from him, because he was as bad-tempered as he was ungrateful.

One day, eating in a great hurry, the wolf got a bone stuck in his throat. Cough! Cough! Cough-cough! The bone wouldn’t go up and it wouldn’t go down. His throat hurt terribly; he couldn’t swallow, and even talking was painful. The wolf ran this way and that, twisting in pain.

He went to one animal after another. “Save me! Someone take this bone out of my throat! Whoever does will get a big reward!” But nobody wanted to put their head near the wolf’s sharp teeth. They all backed away in fear.

At last he went to the riverbank, where a crane stood on one leg, catching fish. The crane had a long neck and a long, thin beak. The wolf begged, “Sister Crane, please be kind! Use your long beak to pull the bone out. I promise I’ll reward you well.”

The crane felt sorry for him. She was a little scared too, but she agreed. The wolf opened his mouth wide. His sharp teeth glinted! Carefully the crane slipped her long neck and beak inside the wolf’s mouth. Slowly, gently—tug! Out came the bone.

The pain vanished at once. The wolf let out a long sigh of relief. The crane said politely, “Brother Wolf, you’re better now. Will you give me the reward you promised?”

The wolf bared his teeth and laughed. “Reward? What reward? You put your head inside a wolf’s mouth and pulled it out safe and sound—that’s your reward! Off you go; you’re lucky to be alive!” And he stalked away.

The crane stood there in astonishment. She had helped him, and he had not even said thank you! That day she understood that helping is good, but we must be careful before trusting the promises of the wicked and ungrateful. And when the forest heard what the wolf had done, nobody ever trusted him again.
