এক বনের ধারে থাকত এক শেয়াল। এক রাতে খাবারের খোঁজে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে সে ঢুকে পড়ল পাশের গ্রামে। গ্রামের কুকুরগুলো তাকে দেখেই ঘেউ ঘেউ করে তাড়া করল! শেয়াল প্রাণপণে দৌড়ে ঢুকে পড়ল এক রংমিস্ত্রির উঠোনে, আর ভয়ে লাফ দিল একটা বড় চৌবাচ্চায়—ঝপাং!
At the edge of a forest lived a jackal. One night, while hunting for food, he wandered into the nearby village. The village dogs spotted him and chased him, barking wildly! The jackal ran for his life into a dyer’s yard and, in a panic, jumped into a big tub—SPLASH!
চৌবাচ্চাটা ছিল নীল রঙে ভরা। কুকুরেরা চলে গেলে শেয়াল কোনোমতে বেরিয়ে এল। চাঁদের আলোয় নিজের গায়ের দিকে তাকিয়ে সে অবাক। মাথা থেকে লেজ পর্যন্ত টকটকে নীল! ধুয়েও রং উঠল না।
The tub was full of blue dye. When the dogs had gone, the jackal scrambled out. Looking at himself in the moonlight, he was amazed. He was bright blue from his nose to the tip of his tail! Even washing wouldn’t get the colour off.
বনে ফিরতেই সব প্রাণী থমকে দাঁড়াল। এমন নীল প্রাণী তারা জীবনে দেখেনি! কাকেরা কা-কা করে চেঁচাল, হরিণেরা ভয়ে পিছিয়ে গেল, এমনকি সিংহও দূর থেকে চুপ করে দেখতে লাগল। “এ কে? কোথা থেকে এল?” ফিসফিস শুরু হলো চারদিকে।
When he went back to the forest, every animal stopped and stared. They had never seen such a blue creature! The crows cawed, the deer backed away, and even the lion watched silently from a distance. “Who is that? Where did he come from?” the animals whispered.
শেয়াল ভাবল, “বাহ্! এই তো সুযোগ!” সে বুক ফুলিয়ে গম্ভীর গলায় বলল, “ভয় পেয়ো না। আমাকে আকাশ থেকে পাঠানো হয়েছে তোমাদের রাজা হওয়ার জন্য। আমার নাম নীলকণ্ঠ। আজ থেকে আমিই এই বনের রাজা।” প্রাণীরা মাথা নুইয়ে মেনে নিল। সিংহ হলো তার মন্ত্রী, বাঘ হলো সেনাপতি।
The jackal thought, “What a chance!” He puffed out his chest and said in a grand voice, “Don’t be afraid. I have been sent from the sky to be your king. My name is Neelkontho. From today, I am the king of this forest.” The animals bowed their heads and agreed. The lion became his minister and the tiger his general.
নীল শেয়াল এখন মহারাজ! সবাই তার জন্য সেরা খাবার আনে, পাখা দিয়ে বাতাস করে। কিন্তু একটা ভয় তার মনে সবসময়—অন্য শেয়ালেরা তাকে চিনে ফেলতে পারে। তাই সে হুকুম দিল, “বনের সব শেয়ালকে দূরে তাড়িয়ে দাও!” নিজের জাতের বন্ধুদেরই সে বন থেকে বের করে দিল।
Now the blue jackal was His Majesty! Everyone brought him the best food and fanned him to keep him cool. But one fear never left him: the other jackals might recognise him. So he ordered, “Drive every jackal out of the forest!” He sent his very own kind far away.
এভাবে বেশ কিছুদিন কাটল। তারপর এক পূর্ণিমা রাতে নীল শেয়াল রাজসভায় বসে আছে, চারপাশে সিংহ, বাঘ, হাতি। হঠাৎ দূরের মাঠ থেকে ভেসে এল শেয়ালদের ডাক—হুক্কা-হুয়া! হুক্কা-হুয়া!
Some time passed like this. Then, on a full-moon night, the blue jackal was sitting at court with the lion, the tiger and the elephant around him. Suddenly, from a distant field, came the call of the jackals: “Hukka-hua! Hukka-hua!”
সেই ডাক শুনে নীল শেয়াল আর নিজেকে সামলাতে পারল না। পুরোনো অভ্যাসে মুখ তুলে সে-ও গলা ছেড়ে ডেকে উঠল—“হুক্কা-হুয়া! হুক্কা-হুয়া!” সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সভা চুপ। সবাই হাঁ করে তাকিয়ে রইল। সিংহ গর্জে উঠল, “এ তো দেখছি এক সাধারণ শেয়াল! নীল রং মেখে আমাদের এতদিন বোকা বানিয়েছে!”
Hearing that call, the blue jackal couldn’t help himself. Out of old habit, he lifted his head and howled at the top of his voice, “Hukka-hua! Hukka-hua!” At once the court fell silent. Everyone stared. The lion roared, “Why, he’s just an ordinary jackal! He’s fooled us all this time with blue paint!”
প্রাণীরা রেগে তেড়ে এল। নীল শেয়াল লেজ গুটিয়ে প্রাণ নিয়ে দৌড়ে পালাল বন ছেড়ে, আর কোনোদিন ফিরে আসার সাহস পেল না। তাড়িয়ে দেওয়া শেয়ালেরা আবার বনে ফিরে এল। ভান করে, নিজের পরিচয় লুকিয়ে বেশিদিন চলা যায় না; সত্য একদিন প্রকাশ পায়ই।
The angry animals charged at him. The blue jackal tucked his tail between his legs and fled from the forest, and he never dared to come back. The jackals who had been driven out returned home. You cannot pretend and hide who you are for long; one day the truth always comes out.
