In a green forest lived a hare with long ears, fur as white as cotton, and legs so fast he could vanish in the blink of an eye! There was no end to his pride about his speed. He told everyone, “Nobody can run as fast as me!”
In the same forest lived a tortoise with a hard shell and short little legs. He walked slowly—plod… plod… plod. One day, seeing the tortoise walking along, the hare burst out laughing. “Hey, tortoise, why are you so slow? By the time you reach the market, it’ll have closed!”
The tortoise didn’t get angry. He said calmly, “Brother Hare, I may be slow, but I never stop. Let’s have a race one day.” The hare laughed so hard he rolled on the ground. “You want to race me? All right, we’ll see!”
The next morning all the animals gathered. The monkey was the judge. The race would start at the big banyan tree and finish at the river beyond the hill. The old bear raised his paw. “One… two… three… go!”
Whoosh! Off shot the hare! In a moment he was far ahead. He looked back—the tortoise was nowhere to be seen. “Ha! That tortoise won’t get here till evening. I’ll have a little rest.” He lay down on the soft grass in the shade of a tree. The cool breeze made his eyes close, and soon he was snoring—snore… snore…
Meanwhile the tortoise plodded on. The sun grew hot, he sweated, his legs ached—but he did not stop. “Even if it’s little by little, I’ll keep going,” he told himself. Quietly he walked right past the sleeping hare.
Much later the hare woke up. The sun was already sinking in the west. Rubbing his eyes, he leapt up. “Oh no! It’s so late!” He ran with all his might to the river. But when he got there, the tortoise had already arrived! Everyone was clapping, and the monkey was putting a garland of flowers round the tortoise’s neck.
The hare hung his head in shame. The tortoise went over and said kindly, “Don’t be sad, brother. You run very fast. You just stopped halfway because you were too proud.” That day the hare understood: pride that makes you stop can’t win a race; the one who keeps going, however slowly, wins in the end.
