In a forest lived a lion, a donkey and a fox. One day the three of them decided to go hunting together. The lion said, “Finding food together is much easier than finding it alone. Whatever we catch, we’ll share.” The donkey and the fox nodded happily.

All day they roamed the forest. The donkey brayed loudly to drive the prey out, the fox searched the bushes, and the lion pounced. Before evening they had caught a big meal. By then all three were very hungry.

The lion looked at the donkey and said, “Brother Donkey, you divide the food.” The donkey thought, “We all worked equally hard.” So he carefully divided the food into three equal shares. Then he said with a smile, “There you are, Your Majesty—pick whichever you like!”

The lion flew into a rage. “What! I am the king of the forest, and my share is the same as yours?” With a mighty ROAR, he gave the donkey such a shove with his paw that the donkey turned a somersault and landed flat on his back. There he lay, four legs in the air, completely dazed.

Then the lion turned to the fox. In a stern voice he said, “Fox, now you divide it.” The fox crept forward, head low. He gathered almost all the food into one huge pile, and kept for himself only a tiny scrap of bone at the side.

Then he said politely, “Your Majesty, this big share is yours. This little scrap is quite enough for me.” The lion twitched his whiskers with pleasure. “Excellent! What a fine division! Who taught you to share things out so well?”

The fox glanced at the donkey lying on his back and smiled. “Your Majesty, the donkey’s fate taught me.” By then the donkey had struggled to his feet. Shaking off the dust, ears drooping, he ran away with an empty stomach.

The fox went home safely with his little scrap. On the way he thought, “Whoever learns from other people’s mistakes doesn’t have to suffer them himself.” And the mighty lion? Everyone in the forest learned that working with him never brought a fair share, so after that nobody would go hunting with him again.
