অনেক দিন আগের কথা। এক সবুজ জঙ্গলের রাজা ছিল এক সিংহ। শুধু শক্তিতে নয়, বুদ্ধিতেও সে ছিল সবার সেরা। একদিন সকালে সে জঙ্গলের সব প্রাণীকে তার সভায় ডাকল। ঢাক বাজল—ঢ্যাম কুড়কুড়! খবর পেয়ে হাতি, ভালুক, বানর, শেয়াল, খরগোশ, গাধা—সবাই এসে জড়ো হলো সিংহের গুহার সামনে।
Long, long ago, a lion was king of a green jungle. He was the strongest of all, and the wisest too. One morning he called every animal to a meeting. The drums rolled—dum, dum, da-dum! Elephants, bears, monkeys, foxes, rabbits and the donkey all gathered in front of the lion’s cave.
সিংহরাজা গম্ভীর গলায় বলল, “বন্ধুরা, আমি খবর পেয়েছি, পাশের জঙ্গলের রাজা আমাদের আক্রমণ করার ষড়যন্ত্র করছে।” শুনেই সভায় হইচই! খরগোশের কান কাঁপতে লাগল, হরিণেরা ভয়ে গা ঘেঁষে দাঁড়াল।
In a deep voice the lion king said, “Friends, I have learned that the king of the neighbouring jungle is plotting to attack us.” At once the meeting was in uproar. The rabbit’s ears trembled, and the deer huddled close together.
সিংহরাজা থাবা তুলে সবাইকে শান্ত করল। “ভয় পেয়ো না, বন্ধুরা। আমরা সবাই এক হয়ে সব বিপদের মোকাবিলা করব। এসো, শত্রুকে ঠেকানোর একটা কৌশল ঠিক করি।”
The lion king raised his paw for calm. “Don’t panic, my friends. We will unite and face every danger together. Now, let’s plan how to stop our enemy.”
তারপর সে একে একে সবার দিকে তাকাল। “হাতিভাই, তুমি সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী। তুমি ভারী গাছের গুঁড়ি টেনে এনে পথে বেড়া দেবে।” হাতি শুঁড় তুলে বলল, “জো হুকুম!” “ভালুকভাই, তুমি সাহসী। তুমি থাকবে সবার সামনে পাহারায়।” “বানরভাই, তুমি গাছে গাছে লাফাতে ওস্তাদ। উঁচু ডালে বসে তুমি শত্রুর ওপর নজর রাখবে।” “শেয়ালভাই, তোমার মাথায় অনেক বুদ্ধি। তুমি আমার পাশে থেকে পরামর্শ দেবে।”
He looked at each animal in turn. “Brother Elephant, you are the strongest. You will drag heavy logs to block the path.” The elephant raised his trunk. “At your service!” “Brother Bear, you are brave. You will stand guard at the front.” “Brother Monkey, you are a champion climber. Sit high in the trees and keep watch on the enemy.” “Brother Fox, you are full of clever ideas. Stay beside me and give me advice.”
তখন একটা ভালুক ফিসফিস করে বলল, “মহারাজ, গাধা তো বোকা, আর খরগোশ ভীতু। ওদের দিয়ে কী হবে? ওদের বরং বাড়ি পাঠিয়ে দিন।” গাধা আর খরগোশের মুখ শুকিয়ে গেল।
Then a bear whispered, “Your Majesty, the donkey is foolish and the rabbit is timid. What use are they? Better send them home.” The donkey and the rabbit hung their heads.
সিংহরাজা হেসে বলল, “না, না। এই জঙ্গলের প্রত্যেকেরই কোনো না কোনো গুণ আছে। গাধা খুব ভালো শিঙা বাজাতে পারে। তার গলাও আমার চেয়ে জোরালো! সে হবে আমাদের শিঙাবাদক। আর খরগোশের মতো জোরে কে দৌড়ায়? সে হবে আমাদের দূত, খবর পৌঁছে দেবে চোখের পলকে।” রাজার মুখে প্রশংসা শুনে গাধা খুশিতে হো হো করে হেসে উঠল, আর খরগোশ লাফিয়ে উঠল তিড়িং করে।
The lion king smiled. “Oh no. Everyone in this jungle has some special gift. The donkey can play the trumpet very well, and his voice is even louder than mine! He will be our trumpeter. And who runs faster than the rabbit? He will be our messenger and carry news in the blink of an eye.” Hearing the king’s praise, the donkey laughed out loud with joy, and the rabbit gave a happy hop.
কয়েক দিন পর সত্যিই পাশের জঙ্গলের সেনারা এগিয়ে এল। গাছের মাথা থেকে বানর প্রথম দেখতে পেল। খরগোশ ছুটে গিয়ে খবর দিল সবাইকে। হাতির বেড়া আগেই তৈরি, ভালুকেরা সারি বেঁধে দাঁড়িয়ে। আর তখনই গাধা বুক ফুলিয়ে শিঙায় ফুঁ দিল—ভোঁ-ও-ও-ও! সঙ্গে বিকট ডাক—ঢেঁচু! ঢেঁচু!
A few days later, the neighbouring army really did come. The monkey spotted them first from a treetop. The rabbit raced off to warn everyone. The elephant’s log wall was ready, and the bears stood in a line. Then the donkey puffed out his chest and blew the trumpet—TOOO-OOOT!—followed by his mighty bray, HEE-HAW! HEE-HAW!
এমন জোরালো আওয়াজ আর এমন সাজানো-গোছানো দল দেখে শত্রুরা থমকে গেল। “ওরে বাবা! এরা তো সবাই একজোট! এদের সঙ্গে পারা যাবে না!” বলে তারা লেজ গুটিয়ে ফিরে গেল নিজেদের জঙ্গলে।
Hearing such a mighty noise and seeing such a well-organised team, the enemy stopped in their tracks. “Oh dear! They all stand together! We can never beat them!” And they turned tail and went home to their own jungle.
সেদিন সন্ধ্যায় জঙ্গলে বসল আনন্দের মেলা। সিংহরাজা বলল, “দেখলে তো, আমরা ছোট-বড় সবাই মিলে কাজ করেছি বলেই জিতেছি।” ভালো নেতা জানে, সবার আলাদা গুণকে এক কাজে লাগাতে পারলেই সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি তৈরি হয়।
That evening the whole jungle held a joyful party. The lion king said, “You see? We won because all of us, big and small, worked together.” A good leader knows that when everyone’s different gifts are used for one purpose, they make the greatest strength of all.
