The Lion and the Slave

A runaway slave helps a lion in the forest by pulling a thorn from its paw. Later he is caught and thrown into a lions’ den, but the same lion recognises him and greets him gently instead of attacking. Amazed, the master sets him free, and the lion is returned to the forest.

Long ago, a slave worked in the house of a cruel master. He toiled all day, yet he never had enough to eat and never heard a kind word. One night, unable to bear it any longer, he ran away from his master’s house in the dark.

He ran and ran until he entered a deep forest, full of tall trees, chirping crickets and rustling leaves. Suddenly he heard a sad moan—ooh-ooh-ooh! Peeping through the bushes, he froze with fear. Right in front of him was a huge lion!

But the lion wasn’t charging at him. It was limping, holding up one paw and looking at him with pleading eyes. Looking closely, the man saw a big thorn stuck in the lion’s paw. The paw was swollen, and the lion was twisting in pain.

His heart was pounding, but he felt sorry for the lion. Slowly he went closer and said softly, “Don’t be afraid, friend. I’ll help you.” The lion quietly held out its paw. Carefully, with one pull, the man drew out the thorn, then washed the paw in the cool river and wrapped it in leaves.

The lion’s eyes seemed full of thanks. It licked the man’s hand, just like a pet cat. For a while after that, the two lived in the forest as friends. The lion went off to hunt, and the man ate fruit near the cave.

But one day the master’s men came to the forest and caught him. The master was furious. “Throw this disobedient slave into the lions’ den!” The whole town gathered to watch. The guards pushed him into the cage, and the door clanged shut. When the gate on the other side opened, a huge lion bounded out with a roar. Everyone held their breath.

The lion rushed forward… and suddenly stopped. It sniffed the man. Then, wagging its tail, it sat at his feet and began to lick his hand lovingly! It was the lion from the forest, which hunters had captured a short while before. It had recognised its old friend!

Everyone was astonished. When the master heard the whole story, he felt ashamed. “If even a lion does not forget this man’s kindness, it is wrong to punish him.” That very day the slave was set free, and the lion was sent back to its forest. Kindness and good deeds are never lost; one day they come back to us.
