In a village lived a salt merchant who owned a grey donkey. Every market day, the merchant loaded sacks of salt onto the donkey’s back and took them to a faraway market. On the way they had to cross a little canal. The water was knee-deep, with pebbles at the bottom.

One hot morning, two sacks of salt were loaded onto the donkey. Phew, they were heavy! The donkey trudged along, panting. While crossing the canal, his hoof suddenly slipped on a slimy stone—SPLASH! Down he sat in the water.

The merchant quickly pulled him up. But as soon as he stood, the donkey was amazed. “Hey, my back feels so light!” The water had soaked the sacks, and much of the salt had melted away. The merchant groaned, “Oh no, half the salt is ruined!”

But the donkey was secretly delighted. “Wonderful! I’ve found a great trick. If I sit in the water, my load gets lighter!” On the next market day, right in the middle of the canal, he sat down on purpose—plop! Again the salt melted and the load grew light. The next time, and the time after that—the same thing!

Now the merchant began to watch carefully. “He always falls in exactly this canal? And when he gets up, he has a sly little grin!” He saw through the donkey’s trick. Smiling, he said, “Just wait. This time I’ll teach you a lesson.”

On the next market day, instead of salt, the merchant loaded two sacks of cotton. The cotton was fluffy and quite light. The donkey wagged his tail happily as he walked. At the canal he thought, “Today it’ll get even lighter!” And down he plopped into the water again.

But this time the opposite happened! The cotton soaked up lots and lots of water. When he tried to get up, the donkey felt as if a mountain sat on his back. He said to himself, “Why is my load so heavy? I can’t even move!” He had to drag the dripping cotton all the way on wobbly legs. Walking beside him, the merchant said, “How does that feel, Mr Clever?”

From that day on, the donkey never sat in the water on purpose again. He had learned that tricks to avoid work end up weighing on the trickster. Too much cunning never brings good results.
