At the edge of a forest, on a riverbank, lived an old turtle. He had seen so many winters and summers, so many storms and floods! So all the forest animals had made him their adviser. Whenever anyone had a problem, they came to Grandpa Turtle. He listened carefully, thought slowly, and then gave good advice.
Everyone loved Grandpa Turtle except the crab. The crab burned with jealousy. “I live in the water and walk on land just like the turtle. I even have sharp claws, and I walk faster than he does. So why does everyone go to him? Nobody even says salam to me!”
Out of jealousy, the crab sometimes tried to give Grandpa Turtle a nasty pinch. But his claws only hit the turtle’s hard shell and hurt themselves. That made him angrier still, and whenever he saw the turtle he shouted rude things at him. Grandpa never answered back. He simply went quietly on his way.
One day a rabbit came racing up, panting. “Grandpa! Grandpa! There’s a fire on the far side of the forest!” In a moment the news spread, and every animal gathered around the old turtle. Grandpa sniffed the wind for a while and then said, “The wind is blowing this way. The fire may come here. Don’t delay. Everyone head across the river to the hills.”
At once they all set off. The birds flew away, whoosh; the deer and rabbits bounded off; the bigger animals helped the little ones. Grandpa Turtle started walking too, slowly. Only the crab stood in the middle of the path, shouting, “You silly lot! Running away from home because an old turtle said so? Where would the wind bring a fire from?” But nobody paid any attention.
Last of all, Grandpa Turtle passed by the crab. The crab sniggered, “Where are you off to, old man?” Grandpa smiled. “To the land of Chin and Machin, far, far away!” The crab nearly fell over laughing. “At your snail’s pace it’ll take you ten years to get there!” He never realised the turtle was teasing him.
A little later the smell of smoke drifted on the breeze. Dry leaves crackled and hot air came puffing through the trees. Now the crab’s heart began to pound. He scuttled as fast as he could, leapt into the river with a splash and burrowed deep into the mud. Luckily he was safe, though his shell was blackened by smoke and the tips of his claws were a little singed.
A few days later the sooty crab found his way to the hills where everyone had made new homes. Hanging his head, he said, “Grandpa, please forgive me. Jealousy had made me blind.” Grandpa smiled kindly. “Seeing your own mistake is the most important thing. Come, from today we are friends.” That day the crab learned that jealousy doesn’t harm the one you envy; it harms the jealous one most of all.
