In a village lived two friends, Ramu and Shamu. They were very close. Shamu always puffed out his chest and said, “Ramu, I’d do anything for you! I’ll always stand by you in times of trouble.” Ramu would smile happily.
One day they decided to go to the fair in the next village. The way went through a forest. In the morning the two walked along chatting. Birds chirped around them and dry leaves crunched under their feet. Everything felt lovely.
Suddenly a grunting sound came from behind the bushes—grr, grr! Out came a huge black bear. The boys’ feet seemed stuck to the ground. The bear was slowly coming straight towards them!
Shamu didn’t wait a second. Without even looking at Ramu, he ran and scrambled up a tall tree nearby, hiding among the leaves. Ramu didn’t know how to climb. He shouted, “Shamu, pull me up!” But Shamu pretended not to hear.
Ramu was all alone, his heart racing. Then he remembered something his grandfather once said: a bear will not touch an animal that seems dead. Quickly Ramu lay down on the ground. He shut his eyes, held his breath and lay as still as could be.
The bear came and walked round and round Ramu. It sniffed his hands, his feet, then brought its face right down to Ramu’s ear. Sniff, sniff! Ramu’s heart thumped, but he didn’t move a muscle. The bear decided he must be dead. With a grunt, it lumbered off into the forest.
As soon as the bear was out of sight, Shamu climbed down. Brushing off the dust, he laughed. “Friend, what did the bear whisper in your ear?” Ramu answered calmly, “The bear said that a friend who leaves you alone in danger and runs away can never be your true friend.”
Shamu turned red with shame. He stood with his head down and could not say a word. Ramu set off for the fair on his own. That day he learned a great truth: you know who your real friend is not by their words, but by what they do in times of danger.
