In a forest lived a huge, strong and very bad-tempered lion. His home was a cave in the side of a rocky hill. Every day he went out and grabbed whoever he found, and even when he wasn’t hungry he chased the animals just for fun. The animals of the forest trembled all the time.

One day the animals held a meeting. An old deer said, “If this goes on, soon there will be no one left in the forest.” After much talk, they went to the lion and said, “Your Majesty, you needn’t go hunting any more. Every day, we will send one of us to you in turn.” The lion twirled his whiskers. “Very well! But if anyone is late even once, you’ll all be in trouble!”

This went on for some time. Then one day it was the turn of a little rabbit named Putus. As he sat feeling sad, his friend the tailorbird flew down onto his shoulder. “Don’t be afraid, Putus. Use your head—there must be a way.” Putus twitched his ears and thought, and suddenly his eyes sparkled.

Putus walked very slowly on purpose. He looked this way and that and nibbled some grass. By the time he reached the lion’s cave, the afternoon was nearly over. The lion roared with hunger and rage. “ROAR! Why are you so late? And what good is a tiny rabbit like you?”

Panting, Putus said, “Your Majesty, it wasn’t my fault! Five of us rabbits were coming to you. On the way another lion stopped us. He says he is the real king of this forest! He’s holding the others, and I barely escaped to bring you the news.”

The lion’s mane bristled. “What! Another king in my forest? Where is he? Take me to him at once!” Putus led him to an old, deep well at the edge of the forest. The tailorbird watched everything from a branch above. Putus said, “Your Majesty, he is hiding inside this fortress. Take a look.”

The lion peered into the well. In the still water far below he saw the face of an angry lion! He roared—ROAR! From inside the well came an echo—ROAR! The foolish lion thought his enemy was challenging him. Blind with fury, he leapt into the well—SPLASH!

Of course there was no other lion, only cold water and his own reflection! Climbing out up the slippery walls took him the whole night. At dawn, soaked, muddy and ashamed, the lion ran away from that forest and never came back. Peace returned to the forest, and all the animals lifted Putus onto their shoulders and danced. A clever mind is far stronger than big muscles.
