At the edge of a forest, beside a clear wetland, lived a fox and a crane. The fox was very clever and very naughty; tricking others was his favourite game. The crane was calm and polite. She had long, long legs and a long, thin beak, which she used to catch little fish from the water.

One day the fox thought, “Let’s have some fun with the crane.” Smiling sweetly, he said, “Sister Crane, please come to dinner at my house tomorrow night. I’ll cook something delicious!” The crane happily replied, “Thank you, Brother Fox. I’ll be sure to come.”

The next evening the crane arrived, all dressed up. The smell of hot soup drifted from the fox’s house. The fox brought out two flat, shallow plates with a thin layer of soup on each. “Here you are, sister—eat as much as you like!”

The crane lowered her beak. Tap! Tap! But the tip of her long, thin beak only touched the edge of the plate; the soup wouldn’t go into her mouth. Meanwhile the fox lapped his plate clean—slurp, slurp! Then he laughed. “What’s wrong, sister? Don’t you like it? Then I’ll eat your share too!” The crane went home hungry, but she said nothing.

A few days later, the crane came and said, “Brother Fox, now you must come to dinner at my house. Come tomorrow at lunchtime!” The fox jumped for joy. “A feast! Of course I’ll come!” That night he ate nothing at all, to be extra hungry.

The next day at lunchtime, the fox arrived to a wonderful smell of fish curry. His mouth watered. The crane brought out two tall jars with long, narrow necks, filled with fish curry. “Here you are, brother—eat as much as you like!”

The crane slipped her long beak into her jar and ate comfortably. And the fox? He couldn’t even fit his nose into the narrow neck! He walked round and round the jar, sniffing and licking the rim, but he could not reach the curry. His tummy growled louder and louder.

The fox’s ears turned red with shame. The crane said calmly, “Brother Fox, today I only treated you the way you treated me the other day.” The fox hung his head. “I was wrong, sister.” That day the fox understood that the way we treat others is the way we will be treated in return.
