In a village lived a simple-hearted farmer named Hashem Miah. One day an uncle from the next village, pleased with his help at harvest time, gave him a plump goat as a gift. It was snow-white, with shiny black eyes and a little bell that went ting-a-ling round its neck. “Alhamdulillah!” Hashem Miah was overjoyed. He lifted the goat onto his shoulders and set off for home.
Under a banyan tree by the road sat three tricksters. When they saw the goat, their eyes lit up. One whispered, “What a fat goat! We want it.” Another said, “But if we grab it, the villagers will catch us.” The third grinned. “Not by force—by brains. Listen…”
The three ran off and hid at different spots along the road. After Hashem Miah had walked a little way, the first trickster stepped out from behind a tree, pretending to be shocked. “Brother Hashem! What’s this? A good man like you carrying a dog on his shoulders?”
Hashem Miah said crossly, “Are you blind? Can’t you see it’s a goat?” The trickster shrugged. “None of my business. As you wish.” And off he went. Hashem Miah walked on, but he gave the goat a sideways glance. “It is a goat,” he told himself.
A little further on, the second trickster appeared. “Oh, Brother Hashem, where are you taking that calf? It’s quite big; your shoulders will ache!” Hashem Miah stopped. “A calf? This is a goat!” The trickster laughed. “A goat? Ha-ha! What funny things you say today!” And he went away too.
Now Hashem Miah felt uneasy. He put the goat down and looked at it carefully. Long ears, short tail, a little ‘maa-maa’—it certainly seemed like a goat! “But why did two people say two different things?” Scratching his head, he lifted the goat onto his shoulders again.
As he neared his village, the third trickster came running up, hands on his head. “Oh no! Brother Hashem, you’re walking into the village carrying a donkey? What will people say!” Now Hashem Miah’s heart pounded. “One said a dog, one said a calf, and this one says a donkey! It must be a strange creature that keeps changing its shape!” Frightened, he set the goat down and ran home as fast as he could.
As soon as he was out of sight, the three tricksters came out laughing and led the goat away. When Hashem Miah got home and told his wife everything, she laughed. “Listen, it was a goat all along! You trusted strangers’ words more than your own eyes.” Hashem Miah hung his head in shame. That day he learned that a lie does not become true just because many people repeat it; we must trust our own eyes and good sense.
