On the green slope of a hill lay a small village. Every morning Gopal, the village shepherd boy, took the flock of sheep up to the meadow. The sheep looked like soft white clouds, and as they nibbled the grass they called, “Baa-baa!”

But Gopal grew bored sitting alone all day. One day he thought, “Why not have a little fun?” He cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted as loudly as he could, “Help! Help! A wolf has come!”

The villagers dropped their work and came running with sticks and spades, thud-thud-thud, puffing and panting. But where was the wolf? The sheep were grazing peacefully, and Gopal was holding his tummy, laughing. “Hee hee! I fooled you all!” The villagers frowned. “Don’t tell lies like that again, Gopal.”

A few days later he did the very same thing. “Wolf! Wolf!” Again everyone rushed up the hill, and again it was a lie. This time they walked home with long faces. The old village headman shook his head. “My boy, once you lose people’s trust, it is very hard to win it back.”

Then one evening, as the sun was sinking behind the hill, something rustled in the bushes, and out stepped a real grey wolf, with glowing eyes and pointed ears. The frightened sheep began to scatter in every direction.

Gopal screamed with all his might. “Help! A wolf has really come! This time it’s true!” The villagers heard him, but nobody moved. “He’s playing his tricks again,” they said, and went on with their work.

The wolf chased the flock away towards the forest. That evening, when Gopal counted his sheep, several of them were missing. He sat down at the edge of the meadow and sobbed.

The headman came and gently put a hand on his back. Gopal wiped his eyes. “I will never tell a lie again,” he said. From that day on he truly changed, and little by little the villagers learned to trust him again. Gopal had learned that when you lie again and again, no one believes you even when you tell the truth.
