এক ছোট্ট নদীর দুই পাড়ে ছিল দুটি সবুজ মাঠ। এক পাড়ে থাকত লাল রঙের ছাগল লালু, আর অন্য পাড়ে থাকত গাঢ় নীল রঙের ছাগল নীলু। নদীর ওপর ছিল একটা সরু কাঠের সাঁকো—এতই সরু যে একসঙ্গে শুধু একজনই পার হতে পারে।
On the two banks of a little river lay two green meadows. On one bank lived a red goat called Lalu, and on the other lived a dark-blue goat called Nilu. Across the river was a narrow wooden bridge, so narrow that only one animal could cross at a time.
দুজনেই ছিল ভীষণ জেদি। লালু ভাবত, “আমার মতো শক্তিশালী ছাগল আর নেই!” নীলু ভাবত, “আমি কারও কথা শুনি না, সবাই আমার কথা শুনবে!”
Both goats were terribly stubborn. Lalu thought, “There’s no goat as strong as me!” Nilu thought, “I never listen to anyone; everyone should listen to me!”
এক সকালে লালুর মনে হলো, ওপারের ঘাস নিশ্চয়ই বেশি সবুজ, বেশি মিষ্টি। ঠিক একই সময়ে নীলুরও মনে হলো, এপারের ঘাসই বেশি মজার। দুজনেই একসঙ্গে উঠল সাঁকোয়—টুক টুক, টুক টুক। আর ঠিক মাঝখানে এসে মুখোমুখি!
One morning Lalu decided that the grass on the other side must be greener and sweeter. At that very moment, Nilu decided that the grass on Lalu’s side looked tastier. Both stepped onto the bridge at the same time, trip-trap, trip-trap, and met face to face right in the middle!
লালু শিং নাড়িয়ে বলল, “সরে যাও! আমি আগে উঠেছি, আমাকে যেতে দাও।” নীলু পা ঠুকে বলল, “কক্ষনো না! তুমি পিছিয়ে যাও। আমি কেন সরব?”
Lalu shook his horns. “Move aside! I got on first, so let me pass.” Nilu stamped his hoof. “Never! You go back. Why should I move?”
“ম্যা-অ্যা! আমি সরব না!” “ম্যা-অ্যা! আমিও সরব না!” কেউ এক পা-ও পিছোতে রাজি নয়। নিচে নদীর পানি কলকল করে বয়ে যাচ্ছে, আর সাঁকোটা দুজনের ভারে ক্যাঁচক্যাঁচ করছে।
“Maa-aa! I won’t move!” “Maa-aa! Neither will I!” Neither would step back even one step. Below, the river gurgled past, and the bridge creaked under their weight.
শেষে রাগের চোটে দুজনে মাথা নিচু করে শিং দিয়ে ঠেলাঠেলি শুরু করল। ঠকাস! ঠকাস! সরু সাঁকো দুলতে লাগল এদিক-ওদিক। হঠাৎ দুজনেরই পা পিছলে গেল—আর ঝপাং! ঝপাং! দুই ছাগলই গিয়ে পড়ল ঠান্ডা নদীর পানিতে।
At last, in a rage, they lowered their heads and began pushing with their horns. Clack! Clack! The narrow bridge swayed from side to side. Suddenly both of them slipped, and splash! splash! Both goats fell into the cold river.
স্রোতের সঙ্গে হাবুডুবু খেতে খেতে, হাত-পা ছুড়ে অনেক কষ্টে দুজনে পাড়ে উঠল। ভিজে চুপচুপে, কাঁপতে কাঁপতে, নাকমুখ দিয়ে পানি ঝরছে। ওপারের ঘাস খাওয়া তো দূরের কথা, এখন রোদে বসে গা শুকানোই বড় কাজ!
Tumbling in the current and kicking hard, they struggled to the bank and climbed out. They were soaking wet and shivering, with water dripping from their noses. Forget eating the grass on the other side; now their big job was to sit in the sun and dry off!
লালু লজ্জা পেয়ে বলল, “আমাদের মধ্যে কেউ একটু সরে দাঁড়ালেই দুজনে সুন্দরভাবে পার হতে পারতাম।” নীলু মাথা নেড়ে বলল, “ঠিক বলেছ। জেদ করে আমরা দুজনেই ঠকলাম।”
Lalu said sheepishly, “If one of us had just stepped back, we could both have crossed nicely.” Nilu nodded. “You’re right. Being stubborn made losers of us both.”
পরদিন সাঁকোর মাঝখানে আবার দেখা হলো তাদের। এবার লালু হেসে পিছিয়ে গিয়ে বলল, “তুমি আগে যাও, বন্ধু।” নীলু পার হয়ে গিয়ে বলল, “ধন্যবাদ! কাল তুমি আগে যেয়ো।” সেদিন থেকে তারা শিখে গেল—জেদ করলে দুজনেরই ক্ষতি, আর একটু ছাড় দিলে দুজনেরই লাভ।
The next day they met in the middle of the bridge again. This time Lalu smiled, stepped back and said, “You go first, friend.” Nilu crossed and said, “Thank you! Tomorrow you go first.” From that day on they knew that when you are stubborn, both of you lose, but when you give way a little, both of you win.
