Long, long ago, beside a river, there was a pretty town called Hamelin, with cobbled streets, red-tiled roofs and windows full of flowers. But one year a terrible trouble came to the town: rats! Thousands and thousands, millions of rats!

The town was overrun. The rats ate the bread and cheese, chewed clothes to shreds and even built nests in people’s hats! Day and night there was squeaking and scratching. Fed up, the townspeople crowded round the mayor. “Do something, or we’ll all leave the town!”

The mayor sat with his head in his hands. Just then a strange man appeared at the door. He was tall and thin, with a wide black hat, a bright red-and-yellow coat and a long pipe in his hand. “I can rid your town of rats,” he said. “In return, you must pay me a thousand gold coins.” The mayor jumped up. “A thousand? I’ll give you fifty thousand!”

The piper stepped into the street and blew into his pipe. Out floated a magical tune, tiri-liri-lee! At once rats came pouring out of every corner, hole and sack of grain, big and small, fat and thin, and danced along behind the piper. He walked to the riverbank, and the rats leapt into the river. The current carried them far, far away.

The town was flooded with joy; bells rang and everyone danced and sang. The piper came and said, “Now please give me my thousand gold coins.” But the mayor smirked. “The rats are gone, and they won’t come back. Not a thousand. Here are fifty coins. Be happy with that!”

The piper’s eyes narrowed. He said quietly, “You have broken your promise. You will have to face the result.” With that he stepped into the street again and raised his pipe. This time he played an even sweeter, happier tune.

Hearing it, all the children of the town came running out of their houses. Giggling, clapping and skipping, they danced along behind the piper. The grown-ups stood amazed, as if magic had fixed their feet to the ground. The piper led the children out of the town towards a green hill. A magic door opened in the hillside, and they all went inside.

Only one little boy, whose leg hurt, could not keep up. He came back crying. “Inside the hill there’s a wonderful land, with bright flowers, sweet fruit and games all day! But the door closed before I got there.” Hearing this, the whole town burst into tears.

Full of shame and regret, the mayor ran to the hill. Kneeling down, he said, “Forgive me, Piper! Here are your thousand gold coins, and I’ll give you whatever else you want. Just give us back our children.” After a long while the door in the hill opened again. To the sound of the pipe, all the children came dancing out, smiling, just as they had gone in.

The piper took his bag of gold and vanished. And the people of Hamelin wrote in big letters over the town gate: “When you make a promise, keep it.” From that day on, no one in that town ever broke a promise again.
