এক বনে থাকত এক শিয়াল, নাম চণ্ডরব। একবার বনে খাবারের খুব অভাব দেখা দিল। খিদের জ্বালায় অস্থির হয়ে এক রাতে সে চুপিচুপি ঢুকে পড়ল পাশের গ্রামে। “দেখি, কারও রান্নাঘরে কিছু পাওয়া যায় কিনা।”
In a forest lived a jackal named Chandarava. Once, food became very scarce in the forest. Desperate with hunger, one night he crept into the nearby village. “Let’s see if I can find something in someone’s kitchen.”
কিন্তু গ্রামে ঢুকতেই কুকুরের দল টের পেয়ে গেল। ঘেউ! ঘেউ! ঘেউ! চণ্ডরব প্রাণপণে ছুটতে লাগল। দৌড়াতে দৌড়াতে সে ঢুকে পড়ল এক রংরেজের উঠোনে, আর দিশেহারা হয়ে লাফিয়ে পড়ল নীল রং গোলা এক বিশাল গামলায়—ঝপাং!
But as soon as he entered the village, the dogs noticed him. Woof! Woof! Woof! Chandarava ran for his life. Running and running, he dashed into a dyer’s yard and, in a panic, leapt into a huge tub of blue dye, splash!
কুকুরেরা খুঁজে না পেয়ে ফিরে গেল। অনেকক্ষণ পর চণ্ডরব গামলা থেকে কোনোমতে বেরিয়ে বনে পালিয়ে এল। সকালে পুকুরের পানিতে নিজের ছায়া দেখে সে নিজেই চমকে উঠল—মাথা থেকে লেজ পর্যন্ত টকটকে নীল! এমন রঙের প্রাণী বনে কেউ কখনো দেখেনি।
Unable to find him, the dogs went away. Much later, Chandarava scrambled out of the tub and fled back to the forest. In the morning, when he saw his reflection in a pond, even he was startled. He was bright blue from head to tail! No one in the forest had ever seen an animal of such a colour.
বনের প্রাণীরাও তাকে দেখে ভয়ে আর বিস্ময়ে থমকে দাঁড়াল। “এ কোন অদ্ভুত জন্তু? নিশ্চয়ই খুব শক্তিশালী!” হরিণ পালাল, খরগোশ গর্তে ঢুকল, এমনকি বাঘ-সিংহও দূর থেকে তাকিয়ে রইল।
The forest animals froze in fear and wonder when they saw him. “What strange creature is this? It must be very powerful!” The deer fled, the rabbits dived into their burrows, and even the tiger and the lion watched from a distance.
চণ্ডরব বুঝল, এই সুযোগ! সে বুক ফুলিয়ে, গলা ভারী করে ঘোষণা দিল, “ভয় পেয়ো না! আমি এক বিশেষ প্রাণী। তোমাদের রাজা হতেই আমি এসেছি। আজ থেকে আমার কথা মেনে চলবে সবাই।” প্রাণীরা মাথা নিচু করে মেনে নিল। সিংহ হলো তার মন্ত্রী, বাঘ হলো প্রহরী, হাতি হলো দারোয়ান।
Chandarava saw his chance. He puffed out his chest, made his voice deep and announced, “Do not be afraid! I am a special creature. I have come to be your king. From today you will all obey me.” The animals bowed their heads and agreed. The lion became his minister, the tiger his guard and the elephant his gatekeeper.
নীল শিয়াল এখন রাজা! রোজ সবাই তার জন্য সেরা খাবার আনে, সে বসে থাকে উঁচু পাথরের সিংহাসনে। কিন্তু মনে একটা ভয় ছিল—অন্য শিয়ালরা যদি তাকে চিনে ফেলে? তাই সে হুকুম দিল, “বনের সব শিয়ালকে তাড়িয়ে দাও!” শিয়ালরা মন খারাপ করে চলে গেল বনের দূর প্রান্তে।
The blue jackal was now king! Every day the animals brought him the best food, and he sat on a high stone throne. But he had one fear: what if the other jackals recognised him? So he gave an order: “Drive all the jackals out of the forest!” Sadly, the jackals went away to the far edge of the forest.
এভাবে বেশ কিছুদিন কাটল। তারপর এক পূর্ণিমার রাতে, যখন চারদিক জ্যোৎস্নায় ঝলমল করছে, বনের দূর প্রান্ত থেকে ভেসে এল শিয়ালদের ডাক—“হুক্কা-হুয়া! হুক্কা-হুয়া!”
Some time passed like this. Then one full-moon night, when everything was glowing in the moonlight, the call of the jackals came drifting from the far edge of the forest: “Hukka-hua! Hukka-hua!”
সেই চেনা ডাক শুনে চণ্ডরব আর নিজেকে সামলাতে পারল না। ভুলে গেল সে এখন রাজা। সিংহাসনে বসেই মুখ তুলে সে গলা মিলিয়ে ডেকে উঠল, “হুক্কা-হুয়া! হুক্কা-হুয়া!”
Hearing that familiar call, Chandarava could not hold himself back. He forgot that he was a king. Still sitting on his throne, he lifted his head and joined in: “Hukka-hua! Hukka-hua!”
মুহূর্তে চারদিক চুপ। সিংহ, বাঘ, হাতি একে অন্যের দিকে তাকাল। “আরে! এ তো একটা শিয়াল! রং মেখে আমাদের এতদিন বোকা বানিয়েছে!” রেগে গর্জন করে উঠল সবাই। চণ্ডরব লাফিয়ে সিংহাসন থেকে নেমে প্রাণপণে ছুট দিল। সবাই মিলে তাকে বন থেকে তাড়িয়ে দিল, আর সে কোনোদিন সেই বনে ফেরার সাহস পায়নি। ভান আর প্রতারণা দিয়ে কিছুদিন চলা যায়, কিন্তু সত্য একদিন প্রকাশ পায়ই।
At once there was silence. The lion, the tiger and the elephant looked at each other. “Why, he’s just a jackal! He has fooled us all this time with paint!” They roared with anger. Chandarava leapt off his throne and ran for his life. Together the animals chased him out of the forest, and he never dared to return. Pretence and deception may work for a while, but one day the truth always comes out.
