মাঠের ধারে এক ঝোপের নিচে থাকত ছোট্ট এক ইঁদুর, নাম চুনচুন। আর পাশের পুকুরে থাকত এক সবুজ ব্যাঙ, নাম গ্যাঙর। গ্যাঙর ছিল ভারি দুষ্টু। সে মনে মনে ভাবত, “ইঁদুরটা কী বোকা! একে নিয়ে একটু মজা করা যাক।”
Under a bush at the edge of a field lived a little mouse called Chunchun, and in the pond nearby lived a green frog called Gangor. Gangor was very mischievous. He thought to himself, “What a silly mouse! Let’s have a bit of fun with her.”
একদিন গ্যাঙর লাফাতে লাফাতে গিয়ে চুনচুনকে বলল, “বন্ধু, তোমাকে আমার খুব পছন্দ! চলো, আমরা পাক্কা বন্ধু হই।” সরল চুনচুন খুশি হয়ে বলল, “সত্যি? বেশ তো!” গ্যাঙর তখন একটা লম্বা নলখাগড়ার সুতো এনে বলল, “পাক্কা বন্ধুরা কখনো আলাদা হয় না। এসো, আমার পায়ের সঙ্গে তোমার পা বেঁধে নিই।” চুনচুন একটু অবাক হলেও রাজি হয়ে গেল।
One day Gangor hopped up to Chunchun and said, “Friend, I like you so much! Let’s be best friends.” Trusting Chunchun was delighted. “Really? All right!” Then Gangor fetched a long string made of reed. “Best friends are never apart,” he said. “Come, let me tie your leg to mine.” Chunchun was a little surprised, but she agreed.
প্রথমে দুজনে মাঠে ঘুরে বেড়াল। চুনচুন তাকে দেখাল কোথায় পাকা ধান পড়ে থাকে, কোথায় মিষ্টি ঘাসের বীজ। গ্যাঙর পেট ভরে খেল আর ঢেকুর তুলল—গ্যাঙর গ্যাং!
First the two wandered about the field. Chunchun showed him where ripe grains of rice lay and where the sweet grass seeds grew. Gangor ate until he was full and gave a big burp, ribbit-gurp!
তারপর গ্যাঙর বলল, “এবার চলো, আমার বাড়ি দেখাই।” পুকুরের পাড়ে এসেই সে কোনো কথা না বলে মারল এক লাফ—ঝপাং! পায়ে বাঁধা চুনচুনও হুড়মুড় করে গিয়ে পড়ল পানিতে।
Then Gangor said, “Now come and see my home.” As soon as they reached the edge of the pond, without a word, he leapt, splash! And Chunchun, tied to his leg, tumbled into the water with him.
চুনচুন সাঁতার জানে না। সে হাত-পা ছুড়ে হাবুডুবু খেতে লাগল, নাকে-মুখে পানি ঢুকছে। “বাঁচাও! বাঁচাও!” আর গ্যাঙর পানির ভেতর ডিগবাজি খেতে খেতে হাসছে, “গ্যাঙর গ্যাং! কেমন মজা!”
Chunchun couldn’t swim. She kicked and splashed, gulping water through her nose and mouth. “Help! Help!” And Gangor turned somersaults in the water, laughing. “Ribbit! What fun!”
ঠিক তখন আকাশে চক্কর দিচ্ছিল এক বাজপাখি। পানির ওপর ছটফট করা ইঁদুরটাকে দেখে সে শোঁ করে নেমে এল, আর নখ দিয়ে খপ করে তুলে নিল চুনচুনকে। কিন্তু চুনচুনের পায়ে তো গ্যাঙর বাঁধা! তাই গ্যাঙরও ঝুলতে ঝুলতে উঠে গেল আকাশে। এবার আর তার মুখে হাসি নেই। “ওরে বাবা! আমাকে নামাও!”
Just then a hawk was circling in the sky. Seeing the mouse struggling on the water, it swooped down, whoosh, and snatched Chunchun up in its claws. But Gangor was tied to Chunchun’s leg! So up into the sky went Gangor too, dangling below. Now he wasn’t laughing at all. “Oh no! Put me down!”
বাজপাখি উড়ে চলল মাঠের ওপর দিয়ে। ঝাঁকুনির চোটে হঠাৎ পট করে ছিঁড়ে গেল নলখাগড়ার সুতো। গ্যাঙর গড়িয়ে পড়ল নিচের কাদাভরা ধানখেতে—ঝপাৎ! আর চুনচুন প্রাণপণে মোচড় দিয়ে বাজের নখ থেকে ছুটে পড়ল এক খড়ের গাদায়। বাজপাখি এদিক-ওদিক খুঁজে কিছু না পেয়ে উড়ে চলে গেল।
The hawk flew on over the fields. With all the jerking and swinging, the reed string suddenly snapped. Gangor tumbled down into a muddy rice field, splat! And Chunchun twisted with all her might, slipped from the hawk’s claws and dropped into a haystack. The hawk searched here and there, found nothing and flew away.
কাদামাখা গ্যাঙর কাঁপতে কাঁপতে উঠে বসল। খড়ের গাদা থেকে বেরিয়ে চুনচুন দূর থেকে বলল, “বন্ধুত্বের নামে তুমি আমার ক্ষতি করতে চেয়েছিলে। দেখলে তো, সেই বাঁধনেই তুমি নিজেও বিপদে পড়লে!”
Covered in mud, Gangor sat up, trembling. Climbing out of the haystack, Chunchun called to him from a safe distance, “You pretended to be my friend so you could hurt me. And see, the very same string put you in danger too!”
গ্যাঙর লজ্জায় মাথা নিচু করল। “তুমি ঠিক বলেছ। আমাকে মাফ করো।” তারপর থেকে সে আর কখনো কাউকে নিয়ে এমন নিষ্ঠুর মজা করেনি। আর চুনচুনও শিখল—মিষ্টি কথায় ভুলে হুট করে কারও সঙ্গে নিজেকে বেঁধে ফেলতে নেই। কারণ অন্যের ক্ষতি করতে গেলে নিজেরও ক্ষতি হয়।
Gangor hung his head in shame. “You’re right. Please forgive me.” After that he never played such a cruel trick on anyone again. And Chunchun learned not to tie herself to someone in a hurry just because of sweet words. For when you try to harm others, you can end up harming yourself.
