Ratan and Manik were friends. They played together and chatted together. Ratan often puffed out his chest and said, “However big the danger, I’ll stand by you, Manik!” And Manik would smile happily.
One day the two set off for a fair in the next village. The path ran through a thick forest of tall trees, with birds chirping overhead and dry leaves crunching under their feet. The friends sang as they walked.
As they walked, Manik said a little worriedly, “I’ve heard there are bears in this forest. And I can’t climb trees, Ratan.” Ratan laughed and patted him on the shoulder. “Why be scared? I’m here, aren’t I? If a bear comes, I’ll protect you.” Manik felt better.
Suddenly they heard heavy footsteps behind the bushes, thump, thump! Out came a huge black bear. Grunting and sniffing, it was heading straight towards them!
Ratan did not wait a moment. Without a thought for his friend, he scrambled up a nearby tree and hid among the branches. Manik could not climb trees. He looked around helplessly.
Then he remembered something his grandfather had told him: a bear will not bother someone who lies completely still. At once Manik lay down on the ground, shut his eyes, held his breath and lay as still as a stone.
The bear came close and sniffed around his face, his ears and his head, snuff, snuff. Manik’s heart was pounding, but he did not move a muscle. After a while the bear turned away and slowly lumbered back into the forest.
When the danger had passed, Ratan climbed down. “Well,” he laughed, “what did the bear whisper in your ear?” Manik stood up, brushed the dust off his clothes and said calmly, “The bear told me never to trust a friend who runs away and leaves you in danger.”
Ratan’s face turned red with shame. He hung his head and said sorry. Manik had learned that a true friend is not known by big words, but by how he acts on the day of danger.
The lesson
A true friend stands by you in danger.
