In a village there lived a vegetable farmer who owned a donkey. Every morning, even before the rooster crowed, the donkey had to get up. With baskets of gourds, pumpkins, aubergines and greens on his back, he trotted off to the market. When the work was done, he got juicy green stalks to munch and a cool shady spot to rest.

Still, the donkey was never happy. He grumbled all the time. “Who gets up this early? I never get enough sleep! With another master I’d surely live in comfort.” One day he pulled back on his rope and simply refused to go to market.

The farmer sighed. “What use is such an unhappy donkey?” At the next market day he sold him to a potter. The donkey swished his tail with joy. “At last, I’m free of that place!”

But at the potter’s house his eyes nearly popped out. The loads here were even heavier! He had to haul sacks of wet clay from the riverbank, then carry pots, pitchers and bowls to faraway villages. One stumble and, clang, a pot would break. And there was less food, too.

“This is even worse!” the donkey grumbled again. He tugged at his rope and stamped his hooves. In the end the potter grew tired of him and sold him to the owner of a brick kiln.

At the brick kiln there was black smoke everywhere and the blazing heat of the fire. From morning till evening he carried loads of red bricks. There was no time to rest, no shade and no green stalks to munch. At night, lying down exhausted, the donkey had tears in his eyes.

He remembered the vegetable farmer: the cool morning breeze, the light baskets, the sweet greens and the shady tree. “Oh dear! I was best off back then, and I lost it all by complaining.”

One evening an old horse from his first village passed along the road by the kiln. Seeing the donkey, he said, “Aren’t you the vegetable farmer’s donkey? You had such an easy life!” The donkey hung his head. “I did, but I didn’t realise it then.”

From that day on the donkey stopped grumbling. He did his work with a willing heart and found little joys where he could: a mouthful of grass, a patch of shade. Seeing how calm he had become, his new master began to look after him a little better. The donkey had learned that if you only complain and never value what you have, you may lose the happiness already in your hands.
