In a palace garden lived a peacock whose feathers shimmered blue, green and gold. When the sun shone on his tail, it sparkled so brightly that even the flowers seemed shy. All day long the peacock admired his reflection in the pond and thought, “There is no one in the whole world as beautiful as me!”
He had no time for the other birds in the garden either. When a sparrow came, he called it “a little brown bundle!” When a crow came, he said “a black ghost!” When a myna came, he turned his head away. The birds felt hurt and kept their distance, and the peacock strutted about alone with his tail spread.
One morning a white crane landed at the edge of the pond. It had long legs, a long neck and plain grey-and-white feathers. Quietly it stood in the water, looking for fish.
The peacock turned up his beak. Then he spread his tail with a grand swish and said, “Oh crane, look at your feathers! No colour, no sparkle. Now look at me: a rainbow dances in my tail! A dull bird like you doesn’t belong in my garden.”
The crane did not get angry. It shook the water from its beak and said calmly, “Friend, your feathers really are beautiful. But tell me, can you fly up to those clouds?”
The peacock paused. “Fly? Well… I can get up onto the garden wall, or perhaps a low branch of a tree.”
The crane smiled gently. Then it spread its wings and began to flap, whoosh, whoosh! In no time it rose above the tallest trees into the blue sky, beside the white clouds. From up high it called, “From here I can see the river, the fields and the faraway villages! My feathers may be plain, but these wings carry me into the sky.”
The peacock stood on the ground, staring up. Slowly his shining tail folded down. He understood that beauty alone cannot take you up to the sky.
When the crane came back in the evening, the peacock said shyly, “Please forgive me, friend. It was wrong of me to look down on you.” After that the two often sat and chatted by the pond. The peacock had learned that useful ability is worth far more than good looks, and that no one should be looked down on because of their appearance.
