In a village yard, in front of a thatched hen-house, lived two roosters. One had shiny black-green feathers; his name was Kalu. The other had red-gold feathers; his name was Lalu. Each of them believed that only he deserved to be king of the yard.

Who would crow first at dawn, who would eat the best grain, who would stand in front of the hens: they bickered about everything. “Please stop quarrelling!” the hens would cluck. But neither of them listened.

One afternoon Lalu said, “It’s my crowing that makes the sun rise!” Kalu sneered. “Ha! Your crow sounds like a cracked pot. Listen to a real crow, mine!” And so, word by word, their tempers rose.

One morning the quarrel boiled over. Puffing up his neck feathers, Kalu leapt at Lalu. Wings flapped, dust flew and there were loud squawks! By the fence, the little chicks covered their eyes in fright.

At last Lalu ran out of breath and gave up. Hanging his head in shame, he quietly went and hid in a corner of the hen-house, in the shade of a pile of straw.

And Kalu? His chest swelled with pride. He flapped up to the very top of the hen-house roof and crowed at the top of his voice, “Cock-a-doodle-doo! Look, everyone, I am the strongest! I am king of the yard!” Again and again he crowed, wanting the whole village to hear.

But high in the sky, a large eagle was circling. It easily spotted the shiny rooster shouting on the roof. Suddenly, whoosh! Down swooped the eagle!

Kalu jumped in fright and tumbled off the roof into a muddy ditch, splash! A few of his beautiful tail feathers stayed caught in the eagle’s claws. He scrambled into a thorny bush just in time, and the eagle flew back into the sky.

When Kalu crept out, muddy, shivering and missing his tail feathers, all his pride was gone. Lalu came up to him. “Are you all right?” Kalu hung his head. “Forgive me, brother. I was so busy boasting about winning that I didn’t see the danger.” From that day on the two roosters lived in peace. They had learned that pride comes before a fall.
