It was a blazing hot day in the dry season. There was not a single cloud in the sky, and the sun beat down like fire. A traveller had to reach a town far away. Walking would make his feet ache, so he hired a donkey from a man in the village.
The donkey’s owner wore a turban and a red robe. It was agreed that he would come along to guide the donkey. The traveller climbed onto the donkey’s back, and the owner walked beside them holding the rope. Clip-clop, clip-clop, they went along the dusty road.
Along the way they chatted. “My donkey is a fine one; he never stops,” said the owner. The traveller was pleased. “Then we’ll reach the town before evening.” But the hotter the sun grew, the hotter their tempers became.
By noon the sun was even fiercer. All around were open fields with not a single tree. Dripping with sweat, the traveller said, “I can’t go on! Let me rest a little.” He got down and saw that the only shade anywhere was the shadow of the donkey. So he sat down in it comfortably.
At once the owner pointed at him. “Hey! Get up, get up! I’m going to sit in that shade.” The traveller was surprised. “Why? I hired the donkey!”
The owner shook his head. “You hired the donkey, not the donkey’s shadow! If you want the shadow, you must pay extra.” The traveller grew angry. “What nonsense! Whoever has the donkey has its shadow too. Today the donkey is mine, so the shadow is mine!”
And so a great argument began. “The shadow is mine!” “No, it’s mine!” They waved their arms, stamped their feet and shouted louder and louder. They became so caught up in their quarrel that both of them forgot all about the donkey.
The donkey had been listening with its ears pricked up. Tired of all the shouting, it slowly edged away, and then it bolted, clippety-clop! In a cloud of dust it raced across the fields and vanished.
Suddenly the two men noticed the hot sun beating down on their heads. There was no shade, and no donkey! The traveller had to walk the rest of the way, and the owner spent the whole afternoon searching for his donkey. Ashamed, they both understood that by quarrelling over something as small as a shadow, they had lost the thing that really mattered.
