এক পাহাড়ি বনে থাকত এক বুড়ো সিংহ। একসময় সে ছিল বনের সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী শিকারি। কিন্তু এখন বয়স হয়েছে, দাঁত নড়বড়ে, পা আগের মতো দ্রুত চলে না। হরিণের পেছনে দৌড়াতে গেলে হাঁপিয়ে বসে পড়ে, খরগোশ তো চোখের পলকে হাওয়া!
In a hilly forest lived an old lion. Once he had been the mightiest hunter in the forest. But now he was old; his teeth were loose and his legs were no longer fast. If he chased a deer, he soon sat down panting, and rabbits vanished in the blink of an eye!
খিদেয় পেট চোঁ-চোঁ করছিল। গুহার মুখে বসে সিংহ ভাবল, “দৌড়ে শিকার ধরার দিন শেষ। এবার বুদ্ধি খাটাতে হবে।” মাথায় এক ফন্দি আসতেই তার গোঁফ নড়ে উঠল।
His tummy was rumbling with hunger. Sitting at the mouth of his cave, the lion thought, “My days of running after prey are over. Now I must use my brains.” When an idea came to him, his whiskers twitched.
পরদিন বনে খবর ছড়িয়ে পড়ল—বনের রাজা সিংহ ভীষণ অসুস্থ, গুহায় শুয়ে আছেন, আর হয়তো বেশিদিন বাঁচবেন না। তিনি চান বনের সব প্রাণী একে একে তাঁকে দেখতে আসুক।
The next day news spread through the forest: the lion, king of the forest, was very ill and lying in his cave, and might not live much longer. He wished every animal to come and visit him, one by one.
খবর শুনে প্রাণীরা দুঃখ পেল। প্রথমে গেল এক ছাগল, হাতে এক গোছা কচি পাতা। তারপর গেল এক ভেড়া, তারপর এক হরিণ, তারপর এক বাছুর। সবাই গুহার ভেতরে ঢুকল। কিন্তু অবাক কাণ্ড—যে-ই ভেতরে গেল, সে আর কখনো ফিরে এল না।
The animals felt sorry when they heard. First a goat went, carrying a bunch of fresh leaves. Then a sheep went, then a deer, then a calf. They all went into the cave. But here was the strange thing: whoever went inside never came out again.
একদিন বিকেলে এল বুদ্ধিমান শিয়াল। সে গুহার কাছে গিয়ে থামল, কিন্তু ভেতরে ঢুকল না। নিরাপদ দূরত্বে একটা পাথরের ওপর বসে নরম গলায় ডাকল, “মহারাজ, কেমন আছেন আজ?”
One afternoon the clever fox came along. He stopped near the cave, but he did not go in. He sat on a rock at a safe distance and called politely, “Your Majesty, how are you feeling today?”
গুহার অন্ধকার থেকে কাতর গলা ভেসে এল, “উহ্, বড় কষ্টে আছি, বন্ধু! এত দূরে কেন? ভেতরে এসো, আমার পাশে একটু বসো। তোমার মিষ্টি কথা শুনলে একটু আরাম পাব।” অন্ধকারে সিংহের চোখ দুটো জ্বলজ্বল করছিল।
A weak voice came from the dark cave. “Oh, I am in great pain, my friend! Why stand so far away? Come inside and sit beside me. Your kind words will comfort me.” In the darkness, the lion’s eyes were glowing.
শিয়াল কিন্তু মাটির দিকে তাকিয়ে ছিল। গুহার মুখের নরম ধুলোয় অনেক পায়ের ছাপ—ছাগলের খুরের ছাপ, ভেড়ার ছাপ, হরিণের ছাপ। সব ছাপ গেছে ভেতরের দিকে। কিন্তু একটা ছাপও বাইরে ফিরে আসেনি!
But the fox was looking at the ground. In the soft dust at the mouth of the cave were many footprints: the hoofprints of the goat, the sheep and the deer. All the tracks led into the cave. Not a single one came back out!
শিয়াল মুচকি হেসে উঠে দাঁড়াল। “মাফ করবেন, মহারাজ। ভেতরে যেতে পারলে খুশিই হতাম। কিন্তু দেখছি, আপনার গুহায় ঢোকার অনেক পায়ের ছাপ আছে, অথচ বেরোনোর একটাও নেই। তাই আমি বাইরে থেকেই আপনার সুস্থতা কামনা করছি!”
The fox smiled and stood up. “Forgive me, Your Majesty. I would gladly come in. But I can see many footprints going into your cave and not one coming out. So I’ll wish you good health from out here!”
এই বলে শিয়াল লেজ দুলিয়ে চলে গেল এবং বনের অন্য প্রাণীদেরও সাবধান করে দিল। সেদিনের পর আর কেউ সিংহের গুহায় যায়নি। সবাই বুঝল, চোখ-কান খোলা রেখে ভালো করে দেখলে আর একটু ভাবলে অনেক বড় বিপদ থেকেও বাঁচা যায়।
With that, the fox flicked his tail and walked away, and he warned all the other animals too. After that day, no one went into the lion’s cave again. Everyone understood that if you keep your eyes open, look carefully and think a little, you can escape even a great danger.
