এক সবুজ বনে বিশাল এক কাঁঠালগাছের নিচে থাকত ছোট্ট এক খরগোশ, নাম তুলতুল। সাদা নরম লোম, লম্বা লম্বা কান। তুলতুল ছিল খুব ভীতু—পাতা নড়লেও চমকে উঠত!
In a green forest, under a huge jackfruit tree, lived a little rabbit called Tultul. She had soft white fur and long, long ears. Tultul was very timid; even a rustling leaf made her jump!
এক দুপুরে তুলতুল গাছের ছায়ায় শুয়ে ঝিমোচ্ছিল আর ভাবছিল, “আচ্ছা, পৃথিবীটা যদি হঠাৎ ভেঙে যায়, তাহলে কী হবে?” ঠিক তখনই পেছনে বিকট শব্দ হলো—ধপাস! মাটি কেঁপে উঠল।
One afternoon Tultul was dozing in the shade of the tree, wondering, “What if the world suddenly broke apart?” Just then there was a tremendous noise behind her, THUD! The ground shook.
তুলতুল পেছনে ফিরেও দেখল না। লাফ দিয়ে উঠে প্রাণপণে ছুটতে লাগল আর চেঁচাতে লাগল, “পালাও! পালাও! পৃথিবী ভেঙে যাচ্ছে!”
Tultul didn’t even turn round to look. She leapt up and ran as fast as she could, shouting, “Run! Run! The world is breaking apart!”
পথে এক হরিণ তাকে দেখে জিজ্ঞেস করল, “কী হয়েছে, তুলতুল?” “পৃথিবী ভেঙে যাচ্ছে!” শুনেই হরিণও ছুটতে শুরু করল। তাদের দেখে ছুটল বুনো শুয়োর, তারপর মহিষ, তারপর লম্বা গলার জিরাফ, শেষে বিশাল হাতিও! ধুপধাপ, দুড়দাড়—গোটা বন যেন কাঁপছে। কেউ জানে না কেন ছুটছে, শুধু জানে—“পৃথিবী ভেঙে যাচ্ছে!”
On the way a deer asked, “What’s wrong, Tultul?” “The world is breaking apart!” At once the deer began to run too. Seeing them, a wild boar ran, then a buffalo, then a long-necked giraffe, and at last even a huge elephant! Thud, thump, crash: the whole forest seemed to shake. Nobody knew why they were running. They only knew that “the world is breaking apart!”
ছুটতে ছুটতে প্রাণীরা পৌঁছাল এক পাহাড়ের কাছে। সেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল বনের রাজা, বুদ্ধিমান সিংহ। সে গম্ভীর গলায় গর্জন করল, “থামো সবাই!” সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সবাই থমকে দাঁড়াল।
Running and running, the animals reached a hill. There stood the king of the forest, the wise lion. He gave a deep roar. “Stop, everyone!” At once they all stood still.
সিংহ জিজ্ঞেস করল, “কে বলেছে পৃথিবী ভেঙে যাচ্ছে? কে নিজের চোখে দেখেছে?” হাতি বলল, “জিরাফ বলেছে।” জিরাফ বলল, “মহিষ বলেছে।” মহিষ বলল শুয়োরের কথা, শুয়োর বলল হরিণের কথা। শেষে সবাই একসঙ্গে তাকাল তুলতুলের দিকে।
“Who said the world is breaking apart?” asked the lion. “Who saw it with their own eyes?” The elephant said, “The giraffe told me.” The giraffe said, “The buffalo told me.” The buffalo named the boar, and the boar named the deer. At last everyone turned and looked at Tultul.
তুলতুল কাঁপতে কাঁপতে বলল, “আমি… আমি কাঁঠালগাছের নিচে শুয়ে ছিলাম, তখন বিরাট শব্দ শুনলাম।” সিংহ শান্তভাবে বলল, “ঠিক আছে, ভয় নেই। চলো, জায়গাটা আমাকে দেখাও।”
Trembling, Tultul said, “I… I was lying under the jackfruit tree, and I heard a huge noise.” The lion said calmly, “All right, don’t be afraid. Come and show me the place.”
তুলতুলকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে সিংহ গেল সেই কাঁঠালগাছের নিচে, পেছনে পেছনে বাকি প্রাণীরা। গিয়ে দেখা গেল, মাটিতে পড়ে ফেটে আছে একটা বড়, পাকা কাঁঠাল! চারদিকে মিষ্টি গন্ধ ভুরভুর করছে। ওটাই গাছ থেকে পড়ে ধপাস শব্দ করেছিল।
Taking Tultul with him, the lion went to the jackfruit tree, with all the other animals following behind. There on the ground lay a big, ripe jackfruit, split open! A sweet smell filled the air. It had fallen from the tree and made that great thud.
সব প্রাণী হো হো করে হেসে উঠল, আর তুলতুল লজ্জায় কান দুটো দিয়ে মুখ ঢাকল। সিংহ নরম গলায় বলল, “না জেনে, না দেখে ভয়ের খবর ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া ঠিক নয়। আগে সত্যটা যাচাই করতে হয়।” সবাই মাথা নেড়ে মানল, তারপর মিলেমিশে সেই মিষ্টি কাঁঠাল খেয়ে বাড়ি ফিরল।
All the animals burst out laughing, and Tultul covered her face with her ears in embarrassment. The lion said gently, “It is not right to spread frightening news without knowing or seeing for yourself. First, find out the truth.” Everyone nodded, and then they all shared the sweet jackfruit before going home.
