Long ago there lived a king, and in the palace garden lived a monkey. The monkey was very quick and lively. He turned somersaults, fetched the king’s slippers and danced about wearing the king’s turban. The king laughed until his sides ached. Little by little, the monkey became the king’s favourite companion.

The king gave him a silk coat and a golden necklace, and one day he happily announced, “From today, the monkey is my bodyguard!” He placed a shining sword in the monkey’s hands.

The minister looked worried. “Your Majesty, the monkey loves you, it’s true, but he has no sense or judgement. A sword is a dangerous thing.” The king only laughed. “My monkey would never harm me!”

One hot afternoon, after a big lunch, the king lay down to rest. “Keep watch,” he told the monkey. “Don’t let anyone disturb my sleep.” The monkey puffed out his chest and stood by the bed, sword in hand. A gentle breeze drifted through the window, and soon the king was snoring, zzzz!

Just then a fly came buzzing in and landed on the tip of the king’s nose. The monkey waved it away. The fly landed on the king’s cheek. He waved it away again. This time the fly landed on the king’s chest. Bzzz… bzzz…

The monkey grew furious. “Just you wait! Disturbing my king’s sleep? This is your last day!” Without a moment’s thought, he raised the sword with both hands and swung it hard at the fly. Swish!

The fly zipped away unharmed. But the sword struck the king’s chest! The king woke with a cry of pain. Guards and the minister came running, and the royal physician was called at once. He carefully cleaned and bandaged the wound.

After many days in bed, the king slowly recovered. The monkey said sheepishly, “I only wanted to protect you, Your Majesty!” The king sighed. “I know. Your love was true, but you had no sense.”

The king sent the monkey back to play in the garden and gave the sword to wise, careful guards. Turning to the minister, he said, “You were right. Even the love of a foolish friend can bring more danger than an enemy. Responsibility must be given thoughtfully, to someone who is fit for it.”
