In a village there lived a kind man who had a small farm next to his house. On it lived many hens and their fluffy yellow chicks. Every morning he scattered grain and called, “Here, chick-chick-chick!” and the hens came running, cluck-cluck, cheep-cheep!

Behind the farm fence lurked two naughty cats: spotty Chhitu and his friend Meni. For months they had been licking their lips at the plump hens. But the hens were very careful and spent every night in a coop with a strong door. The cats never got a chance.

One day some of the hens began sneezing and coughing. The man was worried. A friend of his said, “There’s a good doctor in the next village. Bring him tomorrow; he’ll look after your hens well.” The man decided to fetch the doctor first thing in the morning.

Hiding behind the fence, Chhitu heard everything. His eyes gleamed. “Meni, what a chance! We’ll dress up as the doctor. The hens will open the door themselves!” Meni swished her tail with delight. “Meow! Brilliant idea!”

The next morning, as soon as the man had left, the two cats got busy. Chhitu put on a long white coat, round spectacles on his nose and a toy stethoscope round his neck. Meni dressed as his assistant, carrying a bag of medicine. Then they walked up very seriously and knocked on the coop door, knock-knock!

Making his voice deep, Chhitu said, “I am the doctor. I hear you are unwell. Open the door, and I’ll examine you and give you medicine.” The hens peeped through a crack in the window. That voice sounded rather familiar! And what was that peeping out from under the coat? A spotty tail!

The clever hens looked at one another and smiled. Then they all said sweetly, “Thank you so much for coming, Doctor! But we are perfectly healthy now. We don’t need you any more. It would be best if you went back home, then we’ll feel even better!”

Chhitu and Meni begged and pleaded, but the hens did not open the door. Just then they heard the man’s voice in the distance; he was coming back with the real doctor! Dropping the coat and spectacles, the two cats raised their tails and ran for it!

The real doctor examined the hens and gave them medicine, and in a few days they were all well. Snuggled under their mother’s wings, the chicks heard the story of that day. “Remember,” said the mother hen, “never trust someone just because of sweet words and fine clothes. Keep your eyes and ears open, and even a disguise will be found out.”
