In a little village by a river lived a farmer, Rahmat Ali, and his wife Rahela. They had a five-year-old son called Arif. In their little house with its earthen yard, moringa tree and mango tree, their days passed peacefully. Every evening Arif listened to stories from the Qur’an told by his grandmother before falling asleep.

One day Rahmat Ali found a tiny baby mongoose on the edge of a paddy field, motherless and trembling with fear. He brought it home. Arif jumped for joy when he saw it! He fed it milk from his own bowl and played hide-and-seek with it in the yard. The mongoose grew very fond of Arif and followed him everywhere. Rahela, though, was secretly a little afraid. “It’s a wild animal; who knows what it might do!” she often thought.

A month went by. One day they were invited to Arif’s aunt’s house in the next village. As she left, Rahela told her husband, “Arif is asleep. Keep an eye on him.” The mongoose was curled up right beside Arif’s bed. After a while Rahmat Ali suddenly remembered that he had to tie up the cow in the field. Thinking, “I’ll be right back,” he went out too.

The house was completely quiet. Suddenly, with a rustling sound, a huge black snake slid in through a gap in the door! It began to wind its way towards Arif’s bed. The mongoose pricked up its ears and its fur bristled. It leapt forward and blocked the snake’s path.

A fierce fight began. The snake hissed and raised its hood; the mongoose darted this way and that, quick as lightning. After a long struggle, the little mongoose won. The snake lay still on the floor. And all the while, Arif slept peacefully.

Panting, the mongoose went and sat by the door. Its mouth and whiskers were stained red from the fight. It waited for Arif’s mother to come home, so it could show her how it had saved Arif.

Meanwhile Rahela was coming home with a pitcher of water from the pond. At the door she saw the red stains on the mongoose’s mouth! Her heart jumped. “Oh Allah! It must have hurt my Arif!” Without looking and without thinking, in anger and fear she flung the pitcher at the mongoose. It struck the little animal and knocked it over, badly hurting its leg.

Rahela rushed into the room and stopped in her tracks. Arif was sleeping peacefully on the bed, with a sweet smile on his face! And on the floor beside the bed lay a huge black snake. In a moment she understood everything: the mongoose had saved Arif!

Wiping away her tears, Rahela ran and picked up the injured mongoose. “Astaghfirullah! Forgive me, my dear! What have I done without knowing!” She gently washed the wound, put turmeric paste on it and bandaged its leg with cloth. When Rahmat Ali came back and heard everything, he too felt ashamed, for he had left Arif alone.

After a few weeks of love and care from everyone, the mongoose got better and was soon running about the yard with Arif again. That night Grandma told Arif, “When you feel angry, stop and wait a little, my dear. Patience saves us from mistakes.” And Rahela made a promise: “Never again will I act in haste and anger without knowing the facts.”
