In a little hut at the edge of the forest lived a poor woodcutter named Haru. Every morning he set off into the forest with his old iron axe on his shoulder. All day he chopped wood, and in the afternoon he sold it at the market and bought rice and lentils to take home. That axe was the only thing he owned.

One afternoon Haru was cutting a branch from a tall tree beside the river. Chop, chop! Sweat dripped from his forehead and his arms were tired. Suddenly the axe slipped from his sweaty hands and, splash, fell into the deep river!

Haru ran to the bank. The water was deep and the current was strong. He couldn’t even see where the axe had sunk. He sat down on the bank and burst into tears. “Oh no! What will I cut wood with now? How will I bring food home?”

Just then someone behind him asked gently, “What’s the matter, my son? Why are you crying?” Haru turned and saw an old man in a red robe with a snow-white beard. Haru told him everything.

The old man smiled softly. “Wait, let me see what I can do.” He stepped into the river and dived under the water. After a while he came up holding a gleaming golden axe! It sparkled so brightly in the sun that it dazzled the eyes. “Is this your axe?”

Haru looked for a moment and shook his head. “No, Grandfather. That isn’t mine. My axe is made of iron.” The old man dived again. This time he came up with a shining silver axe. “Then is it this one?” Haru shook his head again. “No, Grandfather. That isn’t mine either.”

The old man dived a third time. This time he came up with an old iron axe with a wooden handle. Haru’s face lit up with joy. “Yes, yes! That’s my axe!” He hugged it to his chest with both hands.

The old man’s eyes shone with happiness. “My son,” he said, “even though you are poor, you did not lie out of greed for gold and silver. Honest people like you are rare. As a reward for your honesty, take the golden and silver axes too.”

While Haru was still thanking him in amazement, the old man disappeared somewhere round the bend of the river. Haru sold the gold and silver axes, and he was never poor again. Still, every day he went to the forest with his old axe, and he helped the poor people of the village. Everyone loved and trusted him. For honesty is a person’s greatest treasure, and sooner or later honesty is always rewarded.
