At the edge of a village there was a clear pond full of water lilies. In it lived two fish: the yellow one was called Hundred-Wits and the red one was called Thousand-Wits. As their names suggest, they were endlessly proud of their cleverness. On the big rock by the bank sat their friend, a green frog named One-Wit.
“I have a hundred clever ideas in my head!” Hundred-Wits often said. Thousand-Wits would flick her tail and say, “And I have a thousand!” Then together they would tease the frog. “And you have only one, hee hee!” One-Wit never got angry; he just smiled.
One evening two fishermen walked along the bank. One wore a turban and carried a net on his shoulder. Seeing the fish leaping in the pond, he said, “Look how many fish there are in this pond! I’ll come back with my net tomorrow at dawn.” The other nodded. “Yes, tomorrow at dawn.”
Sitting on his rock, One-Wit heard every word. He quickly slipped into the water and called the fish. “Friends, danger! Tomorrow at dawn the fishermen will come with their nets. Let’s swim along the ditch to another pond tonight.”
Hundred-Wits roared with laughter. “Run away just because of a few words? Let the fishermen come! I only need one of my hundred ideas to escape.” Thousand-Wits agreed. “This pond is our home, where our families have always lived. Why should we leave? I have a thousand ideas. There’s nothing to fear.”
One-Wit tried hard to persuade them, but the fish would not listen. At last he sighed. “I have only one idea, and it says: leave now.” That very night, in the moonlight, he hopped away, plip-plop, to the pond next door.
Early the next morning, while the mist still hung over the water, the fishermen arrived. Splash! A huge net spread across the pond. Hundred-Wits tried to hide in the mud; Thousand-Wits tried to slip through a gap in the net. But not one of their hundred or thousand ideas worked. The net was hauled out, and both fish were caught in it.
Sitting on a lily pad in the next pond, One-Wit watched the fishermen walk away with their basket full of fish. He felt very sad for his friends.
Later, whenever the little fish of his new pond crowded around him, One-Wit told them this story. “It doesn’t matter how many clever ideas you have,” he would say. “True wisdom is listening to a warning in time and being careful before danger comes.”
