Long ago, in a forest, there was a huge lake. Under an old tree beside the lake, thousands of mice lived in little burrows in the ground. They gathered grain, played with their babies and sat on a tree stump in the evenings, chatting. Their days were very happy.
One day a great herd of elephants came to the forest. Their river far away had dried up, and they were searching for water. Seeing the clear water of the lake, the elephants raised their trunks and trumpeted with joy. After that they came to drink every day, and their path ran right over the mice’s homes!
Thud! Thud! Thud! Under the elephants’ enormous feet, the burrows caved in. Some homes were flattened, some food stores were ruined, and many mice were hurt. The little ones hid their faces against their mothers in fright.
That evening all the mice gathered on a tree stump. “If this goes on, none of us will survive!” Someone said, “Let’s move somewhere else.” Then the old king of the mice said, “First let’s talk to the king of the elephants. Perhaps he will understand.”
The next day the mouse king bravely went to the elephant king. Standing beside the giant elephant’s foot, he looked like a tiny dot. He raised his voice and said, “Your Majesty, our homes lie under your path. Every day our houses are broken and our little ones are hurt. If you would kindly take another path, we will always remember it. Perhaps one day we can help you too.”
The elephant king laughed. How could a tiny mouse ever help an elephant? Still, his heart softened. “We didn’t know you were suffering so much,” he said. “Very well, from tomorrow we will take another path.” The elephants kept their word, and the mice built their homes again.
Some time later, the king’s men came to the forest to catch elephants. They set traps of strong ropes among the trees. Not knowing, the elephants walked into the traps and were tied to the trees with thick ropes. The harder they pulled, the tighter the ropes became.
Only one elephant had escaped the traps. The elephant king told him, “Quick, go to the mice! They said they might help us one day.” The elephant ran and told the mice everything. At once the mouse king called out, “Come, everyone, our friends are in danger!”
Thousands of mice rushed to the traps. Nibble, nibble, nibble! With their sharp teeth they cut through every thick rope, one by one. Before the king’s men returned, the elephants were free! The elephant king gently lifted the mouse king with his trunk. “My friend, today I have learned that everyone, big or small, has value. Kindness given comes back.” From that day on the elephants and the mice were friends forever.
