সবুজ এক বনের বিশাল গাছে থাকত অনেক বানর। তাদের মধ্যে এক মা-বানরের ছিল এক ছেলে, নাম টুনি। টুনি দেখতে ভারি মিষ্টি, কিন্তু দুষ্টুমিতে তার জুড়ি নেই!
In a green forest, a whole family of monkeys lived in one enormous tree. One mother monkey had a son named Tuni. Tuni was terribly sweet to look at, but nobody could match him for mischief!
মা বলতেন, “টুনি, এখন পড়তে বসো।” টুনি তখন লেজ দুলিয়ে হাওয়া। লেখাপড়া ফেলে সে বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে সারাদিন এ-গাছ থেকে ও-গাছে লাফিয়ে বেড়াত—হুপ-হাপ, হুপ-হাপ! ছেলেকে নিয়ে মায়ের দুশ্চিন্তার শেষ ছিল না।
His mother would say, “Tuni, time to study now.” And whoosh—Tuni would swing his tail and vanish. Forgetting his lessons, he leapt from tree to tree all day with his friends—hoop-hap, hoop-hap! His mother worried about him endlessly.
এক দুপুরে ঝমঝম করে বৃষ্টি হয়ে থামল। পাতায় পাতায় টুপটাপ ফোঁটা, ডালগুলো ভিজে পিছল। রোদ উঠতেই ক্লান্ত মা একটা ডালে বসে ঘুমিয়ে পড়লেন। এই সুযোগে টুনি মায়ের চোখ ফাঁকি দিয়ে উঠে গেল গাছের একেবারে মগডালে, যেখানে বন্ধুরা লাফালাফি করছিল।
One afternoon a heavy shower pattered down and then stopped. Drops plinked from leaf to leaf, and the branches were wet and slippery. When the clouds drifted away and the sun came out, his tired mother dozed off on a branch. Seizing his chance, Tuni slipped past her and climbed right up to the treetop, where his friends were bouncing about.
“দেখো, আমি সবার চেয়ে উঁচুতে!” বলে টুনি এক ডাল থেকে আরেক ডালে লাফ দিল। কিন্তু ভেজা ডালে পা পিছলে গেল—সড়াৎ! পাতার ভেতর দিয়ে গড়িয়ে টুনি গিয়ে পড়ল নিচের মাটিতে। একটা চিৎকার দিয়েই সে চোখ বুজে চুপচাপ পড়ে রইল।
“Look, I’m higher than everyone!” cried Tuni, and he leapt from one branch to another. But his foot slipped on the wet wood—whoosh! Tumbling through the leaves, Tuni landed on the ground below. He gave one cry, then lay still with his eyes closed.
চিৎকার শুনে আশপাশের পশুরা চমকে উঠল। কাছেই গল্প করছিল এক চিতাবাঘ, এক হায়েনা আর এক জেব্রা। তারা ছুটে এল। গাছের ওপর বন্ধুরাও থমকে গেল। চিৎকারে মায়ের ঘুম ভেঙে গেল। নিচে তাকিয়ে দেখেন—তাঁর সোনার ছেলে মাটিতে নিস্তেজ হয়ে পড়ে আছে!
The cry startled every animal nearby. Close by, a cheetah, a hyena and a zebra had been chatting together, and they came running. Up in the tree, Tuni’s friends froze, too shocked to speak. The cry woke Tuni’s mother. She looked down and saw her precious son lying limp on the ground!
মা এক লাফে নেমে এলেন। টুনির মাথায় হাত বুলিয়ে ডাকতে লাগলেন, “টুনি, ও সোনা, চোখ মেলে তাকাও একবার!” কিন্তু টুনি সাড়া দিল না। মা ঝরঝর করে কাঁদতে লাগলেন। চিতাবাঘ বলল, “কাঁদবেন না, আমি সবচেয়ে জোরে দৌড়াতে পারি—এখনই ডাক্তার মশাইকে ডেকে আনছি!”
In one leap she was beside him. Stroking his head, she called, “Tuni, my darling, open your eyes!” But Tuni did not answer. His mother began to cry. “Don’t cry,” said the cheetah. “I’m the fastest runner here—I’ll fetch the doctor right away!”
একটু পরেই সাদা কোট পরা, গলায় স্টেথোস্কোপ ঝোলানো বনের ডাক্তার এসে হাজির। মা সব খুলে বললেন—টুনি মগডালে খেলছিল, হঠাৎ পা পিছলে পড়ে গেছে। ডাক্তার জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, “তুমি তখন কোথায় ছিলে?” মা মাথা নিচু করে বললেন, “ঘুমিয়ে ছিলাম।” ডাক্তার গম্ভীর হয়ে বললেন, “ছোটদের খেলার সময় একটু চোখ রাখতে হয়। ওর বাবাকে খবর দাও।” কিন্তু বাবা কাজে গেছেন, আর বনে নেটওয়ার্ক এত খারাপ যে ফোনেও তাঁকে পাওয়া গেল না।
Soon the forest doctor arrived, in a white coat with a stethoscope round his neck. Tuni’s mother told him everything—Tuni had been playing at the top of the tree when he slipped and fell. “And where were you?” asked the doctor. She lowered her head. “I was asleep.” The doctor said gravely, “Little ones need watching while they play. Send word to his father.” But Tuni’s father was away at work, and the network in the forest was so poor that no one could reach him by phone.
ডাক্তার যত্ন করে টুনিকে পরীক্ষা করলেন। তারপর চিন্তিত মুখে বললেন, “ওর ভালো চিকিৎসা দরকার। কিন্তু এই বনে তো কোনো ডাক্তারখানাই নেই! এখানে আমার পক্ষে ওর চিকিৎসা করা সম্ভব নয়।” মা জলভরা চোখে বললেন, “তাহলে আমার টুনির কী হবে, ডাক্তার মশাই?” ডাক্তার একটু ভেবে বললেন, “বনের ওপারে চিড়িয়াখানায় একটা ডাক্তারখানা আছে। দেরি না করে ওকে সেখানে নিয়ে যেতে হবে।” মা চোখের জল মুছে বললেন, “হ্যাঁ ডাক্তার মশাই, চলুন!” জেব্রা পিঠ পেতে দিল, আর চিতাবাঘ ও হায়েনা পথ দেখিয়ে চলল।
The doctor examined Tuni carefully. Then he said with a worried face, “He needs proper treatment. But there isn’t a single clinic in this forest! I can’t treat him here.” With tears in her eyes, the mother asked, “Then what will happen to my Tuni, doctor?” The doctor thought for a moment. “Beyond the forest there is a clinic at the zoo. We must take him there without delay.” Tuni’s mother wiped her tears. “Yes, doctor, let’s go!” The zebra offered his back, and the cheetah and the hyena led the way.
চিড়িয়াখানার ডাক্তারখানায় টুনির যত্ন করে চিকিৎসা হলো। পরদিন সকালে টুনি ধীরে ধীরে চোখ মেলল। মাকে দেখে ফিসফিস করে বলল, “মা, আর কখনো ভেজা ডালে লাফাব না। তোমার কথা শুনব।” মা তাকে বুকে জড়িয়ে ধরলেন। জানালা দিয়ে উঁকি দিল জিরাফ, বাঘ আর হরিণ। হায়েনা হেসে বলল, “বিপদের দিনে ডাক্তার হাতের কাছে—এদিক দিয়ে চিড়িয়াখানাই ভালো!” আর টুনির মা মনে মনে ঠিক করলেন, এখন থেকে ছেলের দিকে আরও যত্নে চোখ রাখবেন।
At the zoo clinic, Tuni was treated with great care. The next morning he slowly opened his eyes. Seeing his mother, he whispered, “Mother, I’ll never jump on wet branches again. I’ll listen to you.” His mother hugged him tight. A giraffe, a tiger and a deer peeped in through the window. The hyena laughed. “When there’s trouble, the doctor is close at hand—in that way, the zoo is better!” And Tuni’s mother quietly promised herself that from now on she would keep a more careful eye on her son.
