লালু আর চালু ছিল দুই রঙিন প্রজাপতি। লালুর ডানায় লাল-কমলা ছোপ, চালুর ডানায় হলুদ-নীল নকশা। দুজন খুব ভালো বন্ধু, কিন্তু স্বভাব একেবারে আলাদা। লালু সবকিছু ঝটপট ঠিক করে ফেলত, আর চালু যেকোনো কাজ করত একটু দেখে-শুনে, ভেবে-চিন্তে।
Lalu and Chalu were two brightly coloured butterflies. Lalu’s wings had red and orange patches; Chalu’s had yellow and blue patterns. They were the best of friends, but their natures were completely different. Lalu made up his mind in a flash, while Chalu liked to look carefully and think things through.
এক সকালে দুজনে দূরে দেখতে পেল লাল ফুলে ভরা এক বাগান। বাতাসে ভেসে আসছে মিষ্টি গন্ধ। পাতার ফাঁক দিয়ে সরু পথটা কখনো দেখা যাচ্ছে, কখনো হারিয়ে যাচ্ছে। লালু ডানা ঝাপটে বলল, “চলো, দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতা! দেখি কে আগে পৌঁছায়!” চালু হেসে রাজি হলো।
One morning they spotted a garden full of red flowers in the distance. A sweet scent floated on the breeze. The narrow path below kept appearing and disappearing between the leaves. Lalu flapped his wings. “Let’s race! Let’s see who gets there first!” Chalu laughed and agreed.
“আমি আগে পৌঁছব!” বলেই লালু সোজা সামনে উড়ে গেল—ফুরফুর, ফুরফুর! পথের দিকে একবারও তাকাল না। মাঝপথে হঠাৎ—খচ! একটা কাঁটাঝোপে তার ডানা আটকে গেল। যত টানে, তত জড়িয়ে যায়। “বাঁচাও! চালু!”
“I’ll get there first!” cried Lalu, and he shot straight ahead—flutter, flutter! He didn’t look at the path even once. Halfway there—snag! His wing caught in a thorny bush. The more he tugged, the more tangled he got. “Help! Chalu!”
চালু ধীরে ধীরে উড়ে এসে পৌঁছাল। সে বলল, “নড়াচড়া কোরো না, আরও আটকে যাবে।” তারপর বলল, “শুধু দ্রুত হলেই হয় না, পথও দেখতে হয়।” দুজনে মিলে খুব সাবধানে, একটু একটু করে ডানাটা কাঁটা থেকে ছাড়িয়ে নিল। লালু একটু লজ্জা পেল, তবে বন্ধুর সাহায্যে সে আবার উড়তে পারল। “ধন্যবাদ, চালু,” সে আস্তে বলল।
Chalu arrived at a steady pace. “Keep still, or you’ll get even more stuck,” Chalu said, then added, “Being fast is useful, but we also have to watch the path.” Together, very carefully, bit by bit, they freed his wing from the thorns. Lalu felt a little embarrassed, but thanks to his friend he could fly again. “Thank you, Chalu,” he said quietly.
আরও কিছুদূর যাওয়ার পর চালু এক মিষ্টি গন্ধ পেল। “আহা, কী সুন্দর গন্ধ! ওদিকে নিশ্চয়ই দারুণ কোনো ফুল আছে,” বলে সে একটা ঝোপের দিকে যেতে লাগল। লালু তখন একটু ওপরে উড়ছিল। ওপর থেকে সে স্পষ্ট দেখতে পেল, ডালের ফাঁকে রোদে চিকচিক করছে একটা মাকড়সার জাল!
A little further on, Chalu caught a sweet smell. “Mmm, what a lovely scent! There must be a wonderful flower over there,” said Chalu, drifting toward a bush. Lalu was flying a little higher, and from up there he could clearly see a spiderweb glinting in the sun between the branches!
“থামো, চালু! ওদিকে মাকড়সার জাল!” চিৎকার করে উঠল লালু। চালু সঙ্গে সঙ্গে থেমে গেল, তারপর ঘুরে চলে এল। বুকে হাত দিয়ে সে হেসে বলল, “দেখলে, এবার তোমার তাড়াতাড়ি চোখে পড়াই আমাকে বাঁচাল!”
“Stop, Chalu! There’s a spiderweb over there!” shouted Lalu. Chalu stopped at once, turned back and laughed with relief. “See? This time your quick eyes saved me!”
এরপর তারা আর প্রতিযোগিতা করল না, পাশাপাশি উড়ল। লালু সামনে কোনো বিপদ দেখলেই সঙ্গে সঙ্গে জানাত, আর চালু ভেবে-চিন্তে ঘুরপথে নিরাপদ দিকটা বেছে নিত। দুজনের আলাদা স্বভাব এবার আর ঝামেলা হলো না, বরং হয়ে উঠল তাদের শক্তি।
After that they stopped racing and flew side by side. Whenever Lalu spotted danger ahead, he called out at once, and Chalu thought it through and chose the safer way around. Their different natures were no longer a problem; instead, they became their strength.
অবশেষে তারা পৌঁছাল লাল ফুলের বাগানে। ফুলে ফুলে মধু, চারদিকে রঙের মেলা। দুজনে একটা বড় লাল ফুলের ওপর বসে বিশ্রাম নিল। তারা বুঝল, গুণ আলাদা হলেও একসঙ্গে থাকলে ভুল কম হয়। হাসতে হাসতে চালু বলল, “একজন ভেবে দেখে,” আর লালু বলল, “আরেকজন সাহস দেয়—বন্ধুত্ব তো এমনই!”
At last they reached the garden of red flowers, full of nectar and bursting with colour. The two friends rested on a big red blossom. They had learned that even with different strengths, being together meant fewer mistakes. Laughing, Chalu said, “One of us looks carefully,” and Lalu added, “and the other gives courage—that’s what friends are for!”
