Rumi often went to play at the far end of the village, where the forest began. One afternoon he heard a strange birdcall—tee-twee, tee-twee!—as if someone were playing a silver flute. Following the sound, he saw a bird with dazzling feathers perched on a branch of a silk-cotton tree. When the sun touched it, it shimmered just like gold!
The news soon spread through the village. Some men came to look, and their eyes gleamed. “If we catch that bird and sell it at the market, we’ll be rich!” They set a trap under the tree, baited with rice and fruit, and hid behind the bushes to wait.
Rumi watched quietly. The bird kept hopping nervously from branch to branch, and even its song sounded shaky. Rumi felt sad. Everyone enjoyed the bird’s beauty, he thought, yet greed was making people want to lock it in a cage!
In the afternoon, when the men wandered off for a cup of tea, Rumi tiptoed to the tree. Carefully he opened the trap and moved it away. Then he whispered, “Why should it be captured just because it’s beautiful? It belongs to the sky.”
The bird did not come close at once. For a while it sat on a distant branch, head tilted, watching Rumi. Then, whoosh, it spread its wings and vanished into the forest. Rumi felt a weight lift from his chest. At least the bird was free to fly in its own sky.
The next morning, as Rumi sat in the yard, he heard that familiar call again—tee-twee! The golden bird flew down and landed on the fence nearby, holding a tiny seed in its beak. It dropped the seed in front of Rumi, plop, and flew away again.
Rumi planted the seed with great care. Every morning he watered it from a little pot, and he built a small fence of bamboo sticks around it so no careless foot would crush the seedling. After some days a green shoot appeared, and then one day it burst into a brilliant yellow flower. Drawn by the bloom, birds of every colour—green, red and white—came to perch nearby, and Rumi’s yard filled with chirping.
Rumi understood that the golden bird’s true gift was not gold. The greatest reward was letting the beauty of nature stay free, caring for it and showing it kindness.

Honesty and compassion are worth more than greed.
