স্কুল ছুটির ঘণ্টা বাজল—ঢং ঢং ঢং! বই-খাতা ব্যাগে ভরে তিন বন্ধু ছুটে গেল স্কুলের মাঠের বড় বটগাছতলায়। সেখানে বসে গল্প করা তাদের রোজকার অভ্যাস। গাছের ডালে বসে একটা বানর লেজ দুলিয়ে যেন তাদের গল্প শুনছিল।
Ding, ding, ding! The school bell rang for home time. Stuffing their books into their bags, three friends ran to the big banyan tree in the school field. Sitting there and chatting was their everyday habit. A monkey on a branch swung its tail, as if it were listening to their stories.
হঠাৎ তারা খেয়াল করল, মাঠের এক কোণে নতুন এক শিশু একা দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। হাতে একটা বই, পিঠে বড় ব্যাগ, কিন্তু কারও সঙ্গে কথা বলছে না। মাঝে মাঝে অন্যদের খেলার দিকে তাকাচ্ছে, তারপর আবার মাথা নিচু করে ফেলছে।
Suddenly they noticed a new child standing alone in a corner of the field, holding a book, a big bag on their back, talking to no one. Now and then the child glanced at the others playing, then looked down again.
“ওকে খেলায় ডাকব?” একজন বলল। আরেকজন সঙ্গে সঙ্গে উত্তর দিল, “অবশ্যই! প্রথম দিন সবারই একটু অচেনা লাগে।” তিনজন কাছে গিয়ে হাসিমুখে নাম জিজ্ঞেস করল। একজন ভারী ব্যাগটা ধরতে সাহায্য করল, আরেকজন বুঝিয়ে দিল তাদের ‘কানামাছি’ খেলার নিয়ম। কিছুক্ষণ পর নতুন বন্ধুর মুখে ফুটে উঠল লাজুক হাসি, তারপর খিলখিল হাসি।
“Should we invite them to play?” one friend asked. “Of course!” said another at once. “Everyone feels a bit strange on the first day.” The three of them went over, smiling, and asked the child’s name. One helped with the heavy schoolbag, and another explained the rules of their blind-man’s-buff game. Soon a shy smile appeared on the new friend’s face, and then a burst of giggles.

The next day at tiffin time they noticed something else. A little boy had rushed down the stairs, tripped and fallen. His knee was scraped, and he was crying. One or two children nearby had started to laugh.
কিন্তু তিন বন্ধু হাসাহাসি করল না। একজন দৌড়ে গিয়ে শিক্ষককে ডেকে আনল। আরেকজন বোতল থেকে পানি এনে দিল, আর তৃতীয়জন ছেলেটার পাশে বসে বলল, “ভয় পেয়ো না, স্যার এখনই আসছেন।” শিক্ষক এসে ক্ষতটা পরিষ্কার করে দিলেন আর তিনজনের পিঠ চাপড়ে বললেন, “তোমরা ঠিক কাজটাই করেছ।”
But the three friends did not laugh. One ran to fetch a teacher. Another brought water from a bottle, and the third sat beside the boy and said, “Don’t be scared, sir is coming right now.” The teacher arrived, cleaned the scrape and patted the three of them on the back. “You did exactly the right thing,” he said.

That afternoon, sitting under the banyan tree, the three friends thought it over. They began to understand that caring for children does not always mean doing something big. Not leaving anyone alone, fetching a grown-up when someone is hurt, listening with patience and keeping ourselves safe—these are all part of caring.
ধীরে ধীরে তাদের দেখাদেখি অন্যরাও নতুনদের খেলায় ডাকতে লাগল, কেউ পড়ে গেলে হাসার বদলে সাহায্য করতে এগিয়ে এল। তিন বন্ধুর ছোট ছোট কাজেই পুরো স্কুলটা একটু বেশি বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ, একটু বেশি উষ্ণ হয়ে উঠল।
Little by little, others followed their example. They invited new children to play, and when someone fell, they hurried to help instead of laughing. Through the small acts of three friends, the whole school became a little friendlier and a little warmer.
